Hi, I am looking for information on the cost of a private elective c section in a London hospital. Does anyone have any examples? thank you in advance :)

Contact private hospitals to ask. Eg Lindo Wing. Bear in mind of something goes wrong you will be transferred to nhs care anyway.

All in I think mine was about £18k. That was 3 years ago.

All the private hospitals have lists of prices on their websites though, you’ll just need to look through them.

This is for the Portland. Consultant’s fees are extra. If you call the consultant’s secretary they will tell you the consultant fees. They’re very open about it so don’t feel embarrassed to ask The fees are much the same for the other hospitals (St John & St Elizabeth might be more).

I had an elective csection privately (due to a previous traumatic birth centre birth) and it was amazing - at the St John and Lizzie's which sadly no longer does private births.

My second elective csection was on the NHS and was also really good - at Queen Charlotte's in Hammersmith, where there is a private wing, but I chose to have nhs everything except I paid for a private room with ensuite, which cost a few hundred pounds and was fabulous, doctors and nurses were amazing and all went well. We had been willing to go private before finding out about this option and I'm so happy we did it this way round!

About £18k 3 years ago.
I think I paid about £7500 to the hospital and £8000 to the consultant but there were lots of extras on top of that e.g. £350 a pop for an ultrasound.

Also it’s not necessarily true that you will need to be transferred if something goes wrong. Something unusual went wrong for me unexpectedly and having a consultant in the room at the time made the difference between a terrible outcome and a healthy one.

I think hospital fees for ELCS are a bit higher than VB due to the additional theatre fees and they allow for a longer post natal stay. Last quote we had from the Lindo had 1 night stay for VB and 3 nights for ELCS.

@thatsamazing your experience of your second section sounded amazing and I wondered if this could be the way for the nhs going forward. Other countries do similar I believe- everyone gets the same level of care but with the option of paying for more on top of you wanted. It’s a very basic description of it but it doesn’t prioritise you over others having basic care just opens up more choices if your willing to pay for them

thatsamazing · 06/02/2020 16:43

Shook - yes totally, for me my own room and bathroom was key and it cost hundreds rather than thousands, also was v lucky with the hospital vibe, happy staff etc. Wish the nhs could provide private rooms for everyone, helps so much with wellbeing and healing!

LillianFullStop · 06/02/2020 16:57

@thatsamazing that sounds ideal! did you pre-book your room or you just had to ask if one was available on the day?

Itsmommy · 06/02/2020 19:21

@theresa88
www.thekensingtonwing.co.uk/birth-package-selector/

It’s usually 8-12k for consultant antenatal and delivery, 8-12k for hospital/theatre/aftercare depending on route of delivery and length of stay, plus 650-800 anesthesiologist.

Some NHS hospitals with private wings will let you book private rooms after NHS section, if they are available.

Good luck!

Itsmommy · 06/02/2020 19:23

Forgot to say, you can do NHS antenatal up to some point in your 3rd trimester and then transfer into private care or book csection only packages w private consultants, which saves 3-5k

thatsamazing · 06/02/2020 22:28

Lillian - you have to book the private room in advance, they said they can't guarantee it as it depends if they have other cases that have a higher need for it but they said in reality it usually works out. Guess it depends on each hospital, I booked via the ward directly so deffo worth a ring where you're thinking of going x
