TMI / Gross Picture attached: leftover placenta?

Flappergirl86 · 03/02/2020 15:57

I gave birth about 5 days ago and found this on my pad today. It is pretty sizeable and chunky. I've been waiting in all day for a midwife home visit but it doesn't look like shes coming and the midwife admin office are closed now. Should I be worried? My notes say my placenta was complete when delivered but the day after birth i passed a similar piece of tissue which was about 5 inches long and 3 wide. Told a midwife about this too and she was like "ooh I dunno" and left it at that.

My postnatal care has been poor to say the least. Anyway -anyone know if I should be calling for an emergency appointment or is this normal?

They usually check it totally after its expelled if its ragged in any way your notes should say

Your cervix will have closed by now from what I remember I personally passed a piece of umbilical cord it was fucking PAINFUL! my placenta was manually removed they just missed a bit 🤷‍♀️

You can have clots up to a two pound coin size I believe and it's not a problem

Isnappedandsharted · 03/02/2020 16:01

possible membrane?

Either way call the midwife.

Soubriquet · 03/02/2020 16:02

I wouldn’t have thought it was placenta

The midwife checks when it’s delivered to make sure it’s all in one piece. Left over placenta can make you very ill

Looks like a large blood clot

adayatthebeach · 03/02/2020 16:04

I had that happen to me. I never talked to anyone and didn’t have any More problems.

Mildpanic · 03/02/2020 16:04

If you squish it does it break up. Placenta wouldn’t break up, a blood clot would. Many many years since I was a midwife but I remember that. It is a sizeable chunk and im pretty sure it would have been obviously not a complete placenta.
How are you? Any symptoms of an infection? Heavy bleeding, pain, fever, offensive odour are all red flags and need to be addressed ASAP. Could you ring MAC unit for advice.

^^try this it suggests golf ball size should be called in if your not happy with your care speak to a dr

gingertom11 · 03/02/2020 16:06

I had something like this about 4 days pp if I remember rightly. It was about the size of a golf ball. Midwife wasn't concerned and just said it was a clot and all was fine. Definitely double check though to be on the safe side. If you feel ok otherwise I'm sure it's nothing to worry about x

endofthelinefinally · 03/02/2020 16:07

That looks like clot plus membrane, although it isn't easy to tell from the photo.
You are at risk of infection so you do need to see a midwife or GP.
Check your temperature.
If you develop a fever, or have pain, bleeding or a bad smell from the lochia, call the postnatal ward.

goingoverground · 03/02/2020 16:15

It looks like a blood clot to me.

It's not uncommon but it's best to let your midwife know. If she doesn't visit today, ring 111 for advice (and to put your mind at rest).

Flappergirl86 · 03/02/2020 16:16

Thank you for your advice everyone. I Don't have any pain (apart from usual post natal discomfort) or fever but will get an appointment tomorrow to be on the safe side if MW doesn't show up today -which it doesn't look like she is doing. Eeeesh.

Looks like a clot.
However even if midwife checked placenta and said all complete, can sometimes be small amount of RPOC.

Keep the padfor your midwife. Hope they fully they turn up, we visit up until 7pm at night

Cacaca · 03/02/2020 19:36

I had that almost exactly the same exactly a week after birth and hummed and hayed about calling triage. I did and they wanted me in asap. Scanned the following morning after all bloods came back negative for infection and turned out it was placenta. The consultant I saw advised 2 ways to deal, surgical procedure or by antibiotics. He advised that as I had already been admitted and wouldn’t sanction me being discharged that day that I should have the procedure as he believed if I didn’t I would a blue light emergency admission.

Apologies if this waffles on - but please get this checked out ASAP.

Helpme1010 · 03/02/2020 20:00

Defo get checked out, I had a blood clot similar size first birth and was left over placenta, then the size of a chicken breast second time I gave birth and again turned out to be placentas, I had such a bad infection I needed anti biotics on a drip and iron.

Mumof2and5angels · 08/02/2020 18:49

I had a D&C 2 hours after the placenta came out which they didn’t realise was incomplete followed by a golf ball size clot (Definatly not placenta) an hour after the D&C which confuses everyone as there should of been nothing at all in there then 2 days later passed a clot that size they said it’s normal

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/02/2020 19:02

That's normal x
