Need help remembering about this. I'm supposed to not want the syntometrine injection aren't I? Could some of you lovely people remind me about this part of things. Thanks.

Why don't you want it?? - Sorry am I being thick here again??

Skate · 01/10/2004 16:25

Hmm, is there a reason not to have it? I wasn't aware of one either - I've had it all 3 times.

Oh, I think last time (4 weeks ago), the midwife recommended it to get the placenta out quickly because I was quite anaemic. Not sure I understand it but I was in labour and in no frame of mind to argue!

Bellie · 01/10/2004 16:39

Toots - I have been told that I should have it as I am aneamic and this will help.

lou33 · 01/10/2004 16:46

I didn't have the jab. Waited until it came away naturally , then waited until the cord stopped pulsating for it to be cut. I wasn't anaemic though, and didn't really lose that much blood overall.

motherinferior · 01/10/2004 20:03

Depends how the rest of it goes, and how long it takes I reckon. After my dippy hippy experience last time I was all set to be all natural, then it took a while and frankly I couldn't be arsed to wait around with better things to do.

fuzzywuzzy · 01/10/2004 20:07

I had the syntometrine injection this time round, last time nobody asked and I wasn't given it and ended up with placenta still left inside me, 2 weeks later I was rushed to hospital with severe haemorrhaging and we needed to change the hall carpets.....

unicorn · 01/10/2004 20:07

mi
dippy hippy indeed!!

unicorn · 01/10/2004 20:09

my 2nd experience was very very diff from first (nearly dippy hippy!)
didn't have resources for injection (hall landing jobby)
anyway it came out very quickly and wasn't an issue at all.
I would say it just depends..... etcetcetec

unicorn · 01/10/2004 20:10

'it' meaning placenta not my ds of course!!!!

pupuce · 01/10/2004 20:18

First of all syntometrine or not (that's the injection) there is NO guarantee that you won't heammorage, also you need to realise that yes it does speed things up (for whom exactly?)
If you had a straight forward vaginal birth with no drugs why would you suddenly give yourseef some drugs to "finish" the job... You can birtha placenta without drugs in 10 minutes, I did it, several of my mums did it.
If you have a water birth (which I think won't apply to you as you are having a VBAC in a hospital that doesn' allow water for VBACs?) you would NOT get the syntometrime unless you chose to and you would need to get out of the pool.

As a doula I always suggest - if mum is interested in not having the injection - that she declines it in her birth plan (and partner reminds the staff otherwise you will get it!) and she can ALWAYS change her mind later.... if the placenta really isn't there after 1 hour you may want to speed things up... and you may find that the placenta is sitting on the cervix and will easily eased out still without any drugs!

To those aneamic women down there.... what did they (MWs) call aneamic ????? It is ideal to have a HB of 9 to 9.5 .... yet many MWs and Doc say that's too low... if you want I can post (again) the massive study that was done and demonstrated that the "perfect" hb is 9 to 9.5 and that it is a sign that the placenta is working well.... some MWs and docs know that but for some reason lots of women are branded aneamic and they are not!

Haven't read all the replies but when I was expecting DS2 I asked to have a natural third stage (wanted to leave the cord until the placenta stopped beating etc) and was advised against it, basically warned about haemorrhaging even although my blood count was good, ended up saying I would have the injection. When it came to it the placenta decided to deliver itself just seconds behind DS2, the midwives had just finished cutting the cord when they noticed it starting to happen so they didn't give the injection. If I was pg again I would go for the 'wait and see' approach and I suppose if it was taking too long I would ask for the injection but IMO it seems pointless to have it if it's just going to come away itself quickly.

Ameriscot2004 · 02/10/2004 18:32

I had the ergo and controlled cord traction the first time round, and I think third stage was recorded as 8 minutes.

The next three, I went all natural, and I think I delivered the placenta within 5 minutes.

My last one was in the US, and they did CCT without the ergometrine - DH was very scared looking at this and I was a bit cross given that my birth plan clearly stated a natural third stage.

fruitful · 02/10/2004 19:56

Some info here here and here .

I think the issues are that the placenta is more likely to get stuck if you have the injection (I think??) and if you don't have it you can delay cutting the cord till the baby has had all the stuff it needs from the placenta.

Me, I'm going to say I don't want it, and feel free to change my mind when the time comes if it takes ages and I've just had enough by then.

zebra · 02/10/2004 19:57

I think the risk in having the jab is that if the placenta isnt out in 10 minutes they start threatening U with trips 2 theatre...
OTOH, waiting 4 it 2 appear meant an hour of KILLER after pains in my case.
U really cant win???

cazzybabs · 02/10/2004 20:48

I also had the injection - don't remember anything about it at all. This time I want a natural 3rd stage - I think it depends on what interventions you have before as to wether they "recommened" the injection.

What ever you decide ask to look at your placeta - it is quite amazing.

Toots · 04/10/2004 20:56

Even better, thanks for all of this. Cazzybabs, thanks - I will have a good look at this naturally occurring wonder!!! Fruitful, that sounds like my opinion

IIRC the jab can make you vomit.
