Hello, I had a scan yesterday and the dr said the baby is back to back, and I am due in 3 weeks. Can i do anything to change it so it's front to back, as I want a natural birth with as little intervention as poss, so want everything as sorted as it can be, before i go to hospital.
Is it possible to turn the baby?

Babies can turn right at the last minute so try not to worry too much. Being back to back just means its likley to be more painful for you but doesn't mean you'll need any more intervention necessarily. Try spending as much time as possible on all fours (they used to say scrubbing floors!), thats supposed to help.

Good luck

if you do a search here for OP / back to back babies or labour, then you will find loads of good info
also, babies can turn in labour ( my OP baby did!)

look at spinningbabies.com and google optimal foetal positioning

at the worst, baby will stay OP, and you will have a slower labour, but staying mobile, upright and active will help

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look through the threads now. By the way, what's an OP, it's not in the anacronims list?

Sorry for the hijack!!

Lulu - Octo emailed me with a message for you, she said "Tell lulumama if I ever have another baby she is HIRED!!! and ask her

awwwww ! did she really, how sweet !

i don't think i can live in until my DD is a bit older, but i can do 24 hour email & phone support

luxmum - was also told by midwife to do lots of stair climbing, evidently hitching your hips up and down (rather than walking on flat surface) can help bubba change position. Worth a try?

BTW - my bub was LOP last week (36+3) and this week is now LOL (left occiputal lateral) which is better for birth. I have been doing lots of all fours and NO reclining on sofa so that may have helped or maybe bubba just decided to turn. We shall see!

Have you got a beanbag? If so lay on your back with your bum and legs pointing up and resting on the beanbag. I know this sounds odd but I did this for 30 mins every day and after 2 weeks baby had moved!

Err.... lying on your back is not a good idea!

You need to keep your belly in front of your pelvis and your pelvis above your knees. And use your belly like a hammock as much as possible.

so get on all fours, sit on an exercise ball with knees lower than hips and well apart, kneel and lean over ball resting head on arms with knees back from pelvis, lie on your left side in bed or use cushions to make a little hoel for bump and lie on front (not that that was a remote possibility for me!)

Also look at www.homebirth.org.uk/ofp.htm

I was at Jean Sutton's study day in Edinburgh last month and she was AMAZING!!!

Even if all the advice on her fails, my DD was back to back and she was a quicker labour than DS who was normal presentation but had the cord round his neck (4 hrs compared to 8hrs). Just had gas and air...
So not necessarily that bad!
Good luck!

I had back to back labour, went on for ages but was fine in the end. I was so conscientious throughout pregnancy, because he was transverse till late on (35 weeks), and I kept swimming (sposed to be good for getting them to turn), always sitting up straight not slouching or lying on my back, DH talked to baby to try and get him to turn, everything. He eventually turned head down but was back to back.

I didn't tear, and wonder if the back to back thing may have even helped? In any case it was all ok for me, so just to say you can do everything right but it may just be the shape of the baby and your pelvis and it just sits the way it wants to! best of luck, I'm sure it will be fine!

My dd was back to back. Labour was pretty intense, with all the pain on my back, none at all on my tummy, and spent all time on all fours to relieve the back pressure, but it was very very quick: 6 hours from 1st contraction to the end and she turned as she was coming out. SO it can be back to back and still be a qick and easy labour.
p.S. I tried all the exercises and positions and swimming to make her turn and mothing worked.
