40 weeks, midwife tomorrow. What will happen?

I went to my midwife appointment the other day and she seemed a bit concerned that I was in so much pain all the time. Whenever the baby moves I'm in agony. This has been going on for quite a while. I can barely walk and have hyperemesis and really low iron. I'm literally in constant pain. Braxton Hicks make me feel like I can't breathe, I'm just so done with it.

She said if I haven't had the baby to come in on day after due date as that's a Monday. I'm wondering what's going to happen at that appointment. She didn't say. Is it normal to go in on your due date? I didn't have an appointment at this stage in my last pregnancy.
Thanks.

She may offer you a sweep.

Yes, probably a sweep and will provisionally book an induction. That's what happens in our trust.

happytoday73 · 30/12/2019 08:51

My appointment after due date was to offer a sweep, see where at, ring up and book in for an induction at a later date (or try for earlier).

Have a think about what you want... Can you cope for another potential 10 days? or do you need this baby out?

I've heard that sweeps aren't proven to actually work? I'm really scared of having that done. :(

They may offer you a sweep. You don't have to take it. Talk to your midwife - what are the pros and cons? How likely is it to work? Are there risks? Can it be done at a later date if you change your mind? Make an informed choice about whether you want to or not.

I like this way of looking at decisions like whether to have a sweep

@Whatsthatspookynoise they work if your body is actually ready... It's a little uncomfortable but nothing to be scared about it may work it may not work and it's your choice... If they offer you a sweep you can say yes or no they don't make you have it done

15 years ago now Shockbut I had a sweep , but DD was small for dates so induction booked . I couldn't bear thought of induction so had acupuncture and out she popped in a couple of days - don't know which one helped ! The sweep was ok actually even though I was dreading it . Just make sure you feel well enough informed and don't be worried about asking the same questions . Just want to point out, I had had acupuncture all through the pregnancy .

Acupuncture is great and I believe medically proven to be helpful in conception, during pregnancy and labour, and after. I have two friends who turned to acupuncture as a last resort after mc’s. Worked for both who are now mums.

Just so that you are aware, I went to the MW at 40 weeks and she offered a sweep and I was happy for her to give it a go. However, my cervix was too high and closed for a sweep (the student midwife couldn’t reach at all and the MW herself could only just get to the cervix). I went into labour naturally about 36 hours later, which had the sweep gone ahead I would probably have attributed to that. My point is that things can change very quickly once you’re due
