Help 4'10 and 10 pound baby!!!

I have just had a 36 week scan as baby was measuring big. They confirmed that it is still big and that the weight now at 36 weeks is 7 pound 10 and they predicted full term wait is 10 pound.

I am only 4'10 with a shoe size of 2 and my midwife said at my 16 week appointment that there was a chance that the baby may get stuck in my pelvis and not progress ending in emergency c-section. Now that she is measuring big there is a higher risk of this.

I am wondering whether I have any right to ask for and whether it is better to ask for an elective c-section if it is likely that after 20 hours of labour it is likely to end in an emergency c-section anyway. I just feel at the moment that I would rather prepare for the major surgery than be knackered after a failed labour and still end up with the surgery.

What are your opinions and thoughts please?

Yeah it is my first. I know it's major surgery and all the risks involved which is why I'd rather be prepared for it if it's going to happen anyway.

In an ideal world I would love a natural birth with a 7 pound baby but I just don't want to go through a long failed labour if it's never going to happen!.

I haven't ever met a consultant and don't know how to.

Midwife should refer you to a consultant. I'm slightly over 5' and all my 4 have been over 8lbs - one CS, but that was because dd1 was undiagnosed breech.

No so far I have only seen a sonographer and my midwife and I'm not due to see her again until 38 weeks now. So do you ask the doctor to refeer you not the midwife?.

That's reassuring tooticky, what size feet do you have if you don't mind me asking? this is what everyone seems concerned about as that is meant to be the size of my pelvis?

Size 5. I'm surprised you haven't seen a consultant anyway.

I saw a consultant with my first pregnancy - it seemed to be standard procedure. With my other pregnancies, they made a point of saying I would have to see a consultant because of having had a CS.

No my midwife just referred me to ultrasound and she just sent me back to midwife. I think I definitely need to get one to see what they recommend.

Yes. A second opinion would be good if nothing else. Mind you, consultasnts do vary an awful lot - during my last pg, a rather anxious consultant I saw insisted on a follow-up appointment. When I arrived, I had a 2 hour wait only to be greeted by a different consultant who read through my notes and said, " I don't really know why you're here."

Nicki10 · 25/08/2007 00:30

Oh no how frustrating. I think I will try and call my GP on Monday and see if they can get me in touch with a consultant.

Good luck

I had an 11lb70z I am 5'8". They reconed right up until I had him he would be 8 to 10lbs.

I would wait until nearer to the time and see how the size is progressing, but you are right a 20hr+ labout then a section is not great. You just have to keep discussing your worries with your gyno and midwife and make sure they are taking your fears seriously.

I'm sure you understand the seriousness of a section, and that it is not he easy option, I have done the 48hr labour then section and the elective and it mde such a difference, yes stil major surgery but I was able to cope so much better.

There is no way that they can accurately predict the weight. With my first baby they did an ultrasound and said he was 7.5 pounds when he was born the next day he was 6 lbs, 1 oz.

With ds2 they said he was 6 lb 11 oz at 34 weeks and predicted a 10 lb baby, well he was born 3 days before due date and was only 7 lbs 10oz.

I would say go for the natural labor because in my experience doctors and ultrasound techs have been way off.

i have herd a few stories of predictions of big babies that have ended up being average sized, i dont think its that easy to predict
