Trying to decide whether to be induced at 37 weeks

I have gestational diabetes with this pregnancy (baby #4) and because I'm insulin controlled I would not be allowed to go beyond 38 weeks anyway. I'm also not that young (39)

I've had 6 episodes of reduced movements so now I've been admitted onto anti natal ward and the consultant who looked at my case last night said she would recommend inducing me on Saturday when I'll be 37+0. My baby is usually super active most days but has days where all the activity seem to drop off and I just get the occasional twitch.

My partner is really stressing out about this and says he thinks the baby isn't ready. He wants me to try & hold out and not be induced yet.

Although the baby's heart traces have been fine and Doppler was fine, the consultant said she would still recommend induction on Saturday but that ultimately it's my choice.

What would you do in this situation?

If you're worried you can ask for a second opinion.

Just read your updates and I would say based on everything you say definitely be induced.

Thank you everyone. I hope my partner will stop stressing. I'm going to take medical advice.

I’ve been booked in for a c section at 37 weeks because of growth restriction. My baby is 3rd percentile, 97% of babies are bigger than her.

My DP is also making little hints and comments about her not being ready. He even asked my mum why they would deliver her at 37 weeks, then came with me to my usual midwife appointment and asked her aswell. The way he was seeing it was that they’re meant to be in there for 40 odd weeks, if she small then why isn’t she being left the extra 3 weeks to gain weight. I explained that she’s obviously better off after 37 weeks being fed after delivery to gain weight quicker, but he keeps saying he doesn’t understand it.

I’m getting a bit fed up of him making comments about it as it’s making me feel guilty for wanting her out, but I know and we have been told that that’s the safest and best thing for baby.

Don’t listen to our men when pregnant because hey have absolutely no idea. They can’t be pregnant, go through the worries and appointments and have a say in what happens, in my opinion.

Take the medical professionals advice, if baby is safer out at 37 weeks, which is also full term, then do that.

I’d much rather bring my baby into the world and home at 37 weeks than risk not bringing her home at all.

Yes I totally agree@SexlessBoulderBelly someone said to me 'it's all very well for him to say when he's not the one carrying the baby!

Dc1 was induced at 37 weeks because of preeclampsia and he was totally fine, 7lb4oz. I had been in hospital for a week before and had regular normal Dopplers but when the placenta came out it was calcified.

Have the induction op, and good luck with it Smile

Doctors don't offer induction for shits and giggles and I've been induced twice. I'd go with the medical advice OP. And be prepared for a swift birth - my DC2 was a quick birth and it was believed to be a combination of induction drugs and walking around a lot to get him out!

Stupiddriver1 · 12/12/2019 16:47

I’d go for an induction but I’d ask about a steroid injection as if a baby is born prior to 39 weeks by section you should have a steroid injection. And an induction at 37/40 with diabetes carries a risk of being an emergency section. Though your previous vaginal births lower that risk a lot.

Moomin8 · 12/12/2019 16:47

Yeah I was induced with dd3 although at 39 weeks. She was out in two hours!

I had my twins at 36+5 due to severe pe. We tried to hang on until 37 weeks, but my body didn’t play along. Neither needed any stay in scbu, and we were home two days later.

If they’re recommending being induced at 37 weeks, I’d go for it if it were me.
