Growth scans... 10lb baby?!?!

Hello

Just looking to hear from anyone with a similar experience who could maybe put my mind at ease a little...

My bump has been measuring around 2cm bugger throughout pregnancy so I have had a few growth scans throughout... all have come back that baby is in 50th percentile until the last two. The second last he was in the 91st percentile and the last, which was done on Thursday at 39+6 he is now in the 95th percentile and apparently going to be 10lbs. Midwife also said bump feels like it is all baby.

They talked about giving me a glucose intolerance test but then decided there probably wasn’t any point when I am at term and they’ve decided to give me a caesarean on Monday, which I have made my peace with.

None of my pee dip tests have come back to indicate glucose at any stage in my pregnancy. Even those carried out yesterday. My blood pressure has been spot on throughout and I have no symptoms of gestational diabetes and the fluid around the baby is the correct amount according to scan. I have been told throughout my pregnancy I have a big bump, but again, is has been measuring bigger anyway but baby’s weight has been fine until 4 weeks ago.

How the hell can he have jumped from 50th to 95th percentile in 4 weeks!!! Is this accurate? I’m worried about the health risks for him now because of it and if I do have GD and it’s not been detected.

If it’s just measured using the tape measure then I wouldn’t worry. Are you being sent for growth scans?

Newsnat · 29/11/2019 20:22

@selfsettling3 - yes I explain about the scans in the post. Sorry does it not read well?

Even the scans aren't accurate...

My 10lb6oz baby was just fine! I measure "small" and they wouldn't scan even though I looked absolutely huge Confused

I had pretty much exactly the same, the did re-test me for GD and it turns out I'd developed it at 37 weeks. They were spot on with their estimate, said he would be 10Ib and he was 9Ib 15 ..

Had a c section because of a failed induction but generally all was well

jenthelibrarian · 29/11/2019 20:31

My son was induced at 38 weeks, as I had gone into GD, and he weighed 10lbs. I did also carry a lot of fluid.

His older sister arrived exactly on time at 9lb 4oz.
I'm about 5ft 6in and weighed less than 9 stone pre-pregnancy.

I had a normal delivery on nothing more than gas and air and although I don't exactly recommend the experience everything ended up fine.

My diabetes resolved itself fairly quickly. He was made to suffer a heel-prick blood test before every feed until he was given the all-clear but soon stopped yelling about it as he sussed out that a bit of pain meant a feeding.

He was big and hungry and I ended up combining bottle and breast feeding [I simply alternated feeds]

He's all grown up now, having always been a big lad he's a good 6ft 4in tall and built like the proverbial brick outhouse.

Please don't worry too much, and good luck.

What's the reasoning behind the Caesarean? You don't sound too happy about it? Could you ask for a second opinion? Ftr, I had a planned section for a breech baby, sometimes it's simply the safest option.

Newsnat · 29/11/2019 20:40

@fouroutoffour - I don’t want induced and he needs to come out before he gets any bigger so section it is.

Sorry it was clear but I’m sleep deprived. I was in a similar boat but earlier and had a previous c section. I turned down an induction at 38 weeks and had a section booked for 39 week. Baby arrived at 38+1 vbac weighting 8lbs 11oz so if anything the scan caused an under estimate.

raspberrymolakoff · 01/12/2019 15:50

DD's scans suggested her second was another huge baby after a dramatic first delivery of 9.5lbs baby. She was under massive pressure to have an elective
C/S. Second baby was actually just under 9lbs at full term and a very straightforward birth.

MerryDeath · 01/12/2019 15:52

the scans are incredibly inaccurate. virtually everyone i know has a story about something or other and being called in for extra scans, predicted to be monstrously big or tiny and they've all had totally normal babies one way or another with the scans predicted weight being miles off.

Strange that they are going straight for a C-section based on scans that are often wildly inaccurate in relation to big babies. Scans are great for picking up small babies and anomalies but not very accurate for larger babies. Also, even large babies can be delivered naturally. If there's no indication of gestational diabetes I wonder what the indicator for a section is.

My DS's scans were way, way off the charts from early on, he plotted way above the top lines (imagine if 125th centile was a thing) and he was large but we still tried for a vaginal birth. Didn't manage it but they were happy for me to try. He was 11lbs.

My DD's scans showed her to be even bigger so I was booked for a section, and she was 8lbs3oz...

I'm in this position well minus the c section which was never an option, I was placed under the big baby trial, which after my scan at 36 weeks she had jumped from middle of 50th/90th to on her own line! Which then sparked the specialist to refer this scheme and bring my consultants appointment forward to 38 weeks.
When meeting the consultant she basically just said, they will take me to no further than 41 weeks instead of letting me go over by a fortnight, which I persuaded her down to 40 + 5 because of my PDP and I am fed up!

It's quite funny as I lost two stone carrying my son with gestational diabetes, and weighed at 36 weeks I had only gained roughly 4kgs, yet baby was measuring 8lb 5oz on her 36 week scan! But not diabetic this this personally looking back at my son I still believe when I went for my test I was constipated from the night before which is possible to effect results as he stayed on 50th centile and was actually born on 41st he was just long and I did have the extra fluid which obvs is an indicator! He arrived 40 + 2 days with induction and the only thing that happened was I had a large haemorrhage due to my placenta didn't want to come out within the time frame is should, so that's my only worry this time around and maybe if she will be big but after speaking to senior midwife today after my sweep she even just looked at me and was happy to say she thinks they will roughly be the same weight after feeling my stomach and what not! Yes I am larger this time around but I have gained weight instead of losing but still fit in all the same clothes so who bloody knows until she is here!

Sometimes they just send you into panic for god knows what reason, like you don't have enough, I still don't forget them telling me on my first I'm going to be diabetic at 40 years old, like can we focus on now my first baby and becoming a mum and worry about diabetes down the line( I was 24 at the time, so I have years to change my lifestyle but diabetes is in the family)!!!

Should all be okay :) safe arrival is my main concern! We are all in the standby lane for the drip to be inserted or emergencies to happen regardless!
