I had my baby on Sunday morning and breastfeeding is going great however I literally leak constantly as if there's a tap on.. I'm wearing bras and pads 24/7 and it's so uncomfortable. Any suggestions on how to remain comfy whilst in this stage?

I got some stretchy crop top type bras from Asda when I was going through this stage I also found lansinoah breast pads to be the most absorbent. I didn't get them but a friend got some silicone sea shell kind of things that catch the drips so that you can use the leaked milk. The leaking does settle down but it takes a few weeks.

If it’s loads then buy breastmilk storage bags, try hand expressing into a pan after feeding, and store the milk for when the baby is older. My Sil used to give expressed breastmilk in cups / food when she weaned

yukka · 20/11/2019 20:59

Deff the lanisoh breast pads, it will no doubt settle down in a few days given baby is so new. Be careful on expressing so you don't increase supply.

Congratulations!

Try bamboo reusable breast pads so much more comfortable.

Wilmalovescake · 20/11/2019 21:09

No advice but loads of sympathy, it’s grim! It does settle eventually.

Snowflake9 · 20/11/2019 21:12

I used to use a breast pad, and also shove a breast pad where the padding actually goes in the bra too. (I had nursing bras where you could remove the pads)

You have my sympathies. I used to leak loads from the other breast when feeding do much so, my poor DS would have a damp patch where his legs were !

I strongly recommend you collect the milk using a collection pump - look on Amazon for the Nature Bond pump or Hakka pump. It just attaches to your boob and collects what's leaking out. If you want, you can apply a little extra suction to get even more milk out. Buy storage bags too and put the milk in the freezer.

Expressing is a good idea as well, to boost your supply later on - just make sure you do it right after a feed so the baby is always offered a full breast.

Thank you everyone - it's nice (in an awful way!) to know it's common at this stage.

The in-laws fetched me a manual pump so I'm using that after a feed to express, which takes the rock hard, full feeling away.

Be so careful with stimulating your breasts even more with pumping as they will produce even more milk!

Put baby to breast regularly to ensure both breasts have the fullness reduced. It won't take long for the breasts to adjust, and milk supply will settle down a bit. Your milk just came in and it can be overwhelming!

Also recommend all the collection type shells so you can save some for freezing, including collecting from the other breast whilst feeding.

Preggosaurus9 · 21/11/2019 03:36

Day 5 do not pump! You need supply to settle down to what baby needs.

For relief try a hot shower gently massage the breast and hand express a bit off.

To absorb the leakage stuff a clean muslin down each side. Just wear a vest top you can replace frequently. Pads were like sandpaper at this stage for me.

Missmagpie1 · 21/11/2019 07:09

Step away from the pump!! You are effectively telling your breasts to make more milk! Just feed regularly and work on a good deep latch each feed. Haaka pump if really needed- this still acts a bit like a pump when you suction it on.

AsAhDiSeh · 21/11/2019 09:55

Oops didn't notice you were only on day 5 - yes don't express for a few days yet (unless your midwives have told you otherwise) - offer the breast to your baby as often as possible instead

Definitely get a Haaka or Nature Bond collection pump and some breast milk storage bags - collect a little every day including while you're feeding. Put the extra milk straight in the freezer. You'll be glad later Smile

Thanks for all of your advice ladies. I've only expressed once, less than an ounce. When should I think about expressing? Thanks for all the tips on soothing too!

Not until 6 weeks ideally if needed

Whodoyoutrust · 21/11/2019 13:17

Yes, don't express yet. 6ish weeks and you can express.
I have a huge oversupply and leak about 4 ounces of milk at a feed, baby is 10months old! So the leaking won't necessarily slow down. Things I've found help- press firmly on the nipple/ breast not being fed off (over clothes) during latch and let down and periodically during the feed to reduce the leak, I find the heel of my hand works best for this

After 6 weeks, when at home, use a haaka/ nature bond let down pump to catch let down. Use collection shells for when out and about.

If you continue to leak, reusable breast pads are the most cost effective solution.

I've been told that body brushing boobies can be helpful?
