Episiotomy.... Who had one and why??

Hiya,

Just trying to do a bit of research really! I had an episiotomy of my ds and was told exactly why, but on my dd I never actually knew I had one until the doctor asked if I was ready for the stitches!

Read through my hosital notes, and it was obv why it was needed with my ds, but there were no reasons on my notes for my dd. When I asked my mw (at the time), she was unsure.

So, did you have an episiotomy...and do you know why??

Thanks

Yes, for ventouse delivery. Wasn't aware of much at time, was only on gas and air but lots of it over quite a long period of time (admitted for induction at 7 pm Wednesday evening, contractions began 2 am same night, baby arrived 4.29 am on Friday ie 26.5 hours after start of contractions) and probably would have agreed to anything by that point!

I was stitched pretty well, wouldn't have chosen it but I don't have any issue with it now.

Needed one for forceps delivery. Tried ventouse first but didn't work so consultant said he was going to do an episiotomy and got on with it. DS1 had a dippy heartrate after 4 hours of pushing under epidural.

I'm assuming I had one, as I had stitches, but neither me nor DP can remember being told I was having one or being asked permisssion or anything. I assume if I had torn rather than been cut they would've told me though... ?

Yes I had one for a ventouse delivery

iliketosleep · 19/08/2007 17:22

yes with first dd, they didnt explain why but i can only presume it was because a) i had an epidural topup around half an hour before i had her so i wasnt realy in control of my pushing, and b) i was very tired and kept asking to go to sleep so i think it was a kind of helping hand for me......
