Has anyone given birth at York hospital?

Hi everyone, I'm due to give birth for the first time at York hospital in January. I've searched existing posts but haven't been able to find anything from anyone who said they had experience of York hospital - is there anything from experience that it would be worth me knowing ahead of time? Thanks so much in advance if so! :-)

I gave birth there 3.5 years ago. It was my first birth and I was not happy with my experience when I was in the build up to giving birth (the actual birth was amazing and I can't fault the care I received during that time). I went to the labour ward and despite it being empty, and me clearly being in labour, I was not allowed to stay. I was sent home at 3cm (didn't go, spent time on the corridor) eventually went home because no one listened to me. I was back within the hour by ambulance (x2 because I nearly gave birth at home) and told I was still not ready, despite needing to push. As a first time mum I didn't feel listened too and it was quite a negative feeling. If it's your first, be mindful of this (could be the same in all hospitals) and be prepared to stand your ground. Another friend of mine also had a difficult time there too. Overall it was fine because me and the baby were fine, but it could have been better. Good luck!!

I had my first nearly two weeks ago at York hospital and can not fault the care we got. We had fantastic midwives looking after us (including a student midwife); they were warm, informative and encouraging. When I first called in, I was told I may be sent home if not dilated enough but it turned out I was 5cm by the time we got in and then only couple of hours until baby arrived so did not end up spending a lot of time there. All in all, it was a very positive experience for me and I hope yours will be too.

If you can, ask for a private room at post-natal ward. They are subject to availability and carry a cost however I felt it was worth doing as we could snuggle with the baby in privacy. Good luck!

Thank you all, that's really helpful and I appreciate the balanced reviews. I'm sorry about your early experience Bumpandtoddler - I'll definitely bear what you've said in mind.

Bumblebee25 - do you remember how much the private rooms cost per night? Also what sort of provision was there for things like towels? Was there an en suite? Were you just in a standard room on the labour ward or were there other options available? So sorry for all the questions, just haven't come across anyone who's been so recently and massively appreciate your firsthand experience

The room we had was £65 per night without private facilities (there was a sink but no other facilities). I think they have en-suite rooms available too but I cannot remember the cost of these.

I brought my own towel but for the very first shower after birth, the midwife recommended using theirs as it can be quite messy. I think own towel for post natal ward would come handy though. I don’t remember any towels being provided there so I would bring one.

Good luck!
