Shivering and achey one week after c-section

Hi,

I had a c-section a week ago, scar looks to be healing okay and isn't hurting - just general discomfort after surgery.

Tonight around 10pm I started shivering intensely and feeling so freezing, I went the loo and I was physically shivering to the point where my body was aching.

I got back into bed, slept for an hour and woke up covered in sweat.

This has kept happening, we have our heating on and our temperature is ideal for baby so the room isn't too hot or cold. Also when I wrap up warm I quickly get too warm but any air at all makes me ache

Im phoning the GP as soon as they open but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what this could be?

I am breast feeding too. I have also had loose stools but I've had those since I had the section.

GO TO A&E.

TottieandMarchpane · 10/10/2019 06:25

Infection? Do you feel feverish?

Or blood sugar dropped through the floor? Have you tried eating something sugary to see if that corrects it?

mathanxiety · 10/10/2019 06:25

They may have left a sponge or other surgical item inside you.

SinkGirl · 10/10/2019 06:27

Please go to A&E. This could be sepsis, mastitis, uterine infection, any number of concerning things but after major surgery you’re at a much higher risk of a dangerous infection.

MustardScreams · 10/10/2019 06:27

Call 111 now, could be an internal infection. Tbh I’d be going to A&E, sepsis is a very serious illness and I’d want it ruled out.

RebornFlame · 10/10/2019 06:28

A&E. Please go now. You may just have a nasty virus but Sepsis from an internal wound tissue (external scar may look fine) is rapid and needs to be treated.

Very often with sepsis your temp will be normal or even low. Please don’t go to a gp as they will automatically send you to hospital anyway.

Best of luck

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/10/2019 06:29

You've got an infection and you need urgent medical attention due to your recent surgery. Go to A&E.

TottieandMarchpane · 10/10/2019 06:29

Let’s not start a screamy “A&E NOW!!!!” pile on, guys.

It doesn’t help, it just panics people.

Seahawk80 · 10/10/2019 06:29

Another one saying go to A&E, I know it's the last thing you'll feel like doing but it could save your life.

ZigZaggyZoo · 10/10/2019 06:31

Your shivering is a warning sign for sepsis. A&E now to rule it out.

TottieandMarchpane · 10/10/2019 06:31

Have you got someone to drive you and someone to look after the baby OP?

Start with 111, anyway, as they can give best advice about which service locally is most appropriate.

boredboredboredboredbored · 10/10/2019 06:31

With those symptom I'd go to A&E and I say that as a nurse of 22 years. Ignore the pp. it could be a severe infection, sepsis even. These things aren't to be taken lightly. Just go.

user1493413286 · 10/10/2019 06:33

Call your postnatal Ward; you have open access to most of them for a couple of weeks to a month. It’ll be quicker if they can then see you or if they’re really worried they’ll tell you to go to a&e.
Infections happen and can be quickly put right with antibiotics. Please don’t panic but also don’t wait for the GP surgery as it could be mid morning before you actually see anyone.

Passthecherrycoke · 10/10/2019 06:33

Hi OP call 111 and they’ll advise- most likely get you an appointment for antibiotics. Not sure why A&E would be your first call. This happened to me last month. 2 weeks after my c section. It was an infection - you may find the pain hits later or tomorrow so don’t dismiss your symptoms because they’re not all there.

It’s horrible, really horrible. My sympathies

Passthecherrycoke · 10/10/2019 06:34

Actually yes give post natal a Call, especially considering the time- they’ll be fairly quiet

sunnyshowers · 10/10/2019 06:37

Go to A &E.
Same happened to me...jaw was frozen and teeth shattering.
I ignored it and when i woke up my section had opened and puss and blood everywhere. Went to hospital and got fixed up fairly easily but it could gave been a lot worse.
A year or so later while ttc we found out my tubes had been very damaged by the infection and i ended up needing IVF for my second pregnancy.
With your symptoms i would immediately do to hospital. I m really sorry if i ve scared you but sections are big operations and you cant be too careful.
Mind yourself

Fireextinguished · 10/10/2019 06:38

Yes call post natal and explain symptoms. You are still under care of midwife, then a and e. I'd be concerned that doctors appt won't be til nearer mod day and not quick enough for what you need.

Passthecherrycoke · 10/10/2019 06:42

That’s why I think 111 would be the best first call. I got my appointment at our walk in centre far faster than A&E would’ve seen me

OP I think whilst you obviously need attention straight away infections after c section are common and not usually serious. It’ll be a painful few days though Sad

userabcname · 10/10/2019 06:45

I'd call the post-natal ward personally. When I was discharged with DS1 I was told to call them rather than go to A and E for the first few weeks after birth and they'd see me faster (which I did at 3 weeks pp as I was ill and they did have me in immediately).

MustardScreams · 10/10/2019 06:45

Infections that include severe shivering, drop of temperature and feeling weak and achy are very serious and need medical attention ASAP.

Anerak · 10/10/2019 07:07

I wouldn't take any chances OP. Hope you're being seen to and get better soon

GrandmaSharksDentures · 10/10/2019 07:15

They may have left a sponge or other surgical item inside you.
This is amazingly rare - actually called a "never event" because this is how often it should happen

Passthecherrycoke · 10/10/2019 07:16

Oh grandma nothing is rare on MN Grin

Hope op is antibioticed up as we speak

ExplodingCarrots · 10/10/2019 07:23

Echoing everyone else ...get to A&E ASAP. I had Sepsis after a c section and I was shivering and freezing but I had a temp of 40 and a rapid pulse and went downhill quite quick . I don't want to frighten you but hope it gets you checked out sooner.

Taxtaxtax · 10/10/2019 07:28

Happened to me and was a womb infection due to retained products. Best to get checked out. I went to the GP who took a swab, gave antibiotics and arranged a scan. Good luck Flowers
