Fetal heart rate, Will it happen again?

I’ve had two children, a girl and a boy. In both labours the fetal heart rate became serious enough for a crash call and to be rolled into theatre. One an emcs the other a ventose and episiotomy. Reviewing my maternity notes both children had heart rates less than 76bpm at worse. I’m petrified it will happen again and the outcome will be different. Has anyone experience of this? Is there any reason why I might have had two almost identical labours? Consultant seems to think that Since the children came out healthy in the end, I shouldn’t be worried. But I’m petrified and due to give birth in a months time

What would you do?

Sorry to hear that it does sound scary. Have been in a similar situation resulting in emergency c-section. Was under consultant for 2nd pregnancy due to the trauma and circumstances I was offered a choice and opted for elective c section which was totally different and calm. Push for what you want and the safest option for your child.
A nurse told me that I'm not a failure(felt I was as I "couldn't give birth naturally")as I did the best thing for the safety of my child to enter the world. C sections arent the easiest options as people like to believe but push for what you want especially if you have a strong fear. Good luck all the best x

Thank you for your reply @glittersparkle85 I’m very grateful . The consultant I saw I was hoping would say the same but even though it’s “patient choice” he certainly laid on the risks of c section pretty hard , and made it sound like the wrong choice. To me it seems safer to lift a child into the world when they are happy and kicking rather than stressed and squeezed but perhaps I’m naive and should take better heed of the risks of surgery. I almost wish the baby would turn and make the decision for me , but alas it’s all ready to dive

No problem of course every birth has its risks whether it be vaginal or csection ultimately it's your body your child your choice NOT his no one but you can make the decision. Do what Is best for you and your baby

As you had his twice, do you have a condition that causes it eg preclampsia / high blood pressure / umbilical problems? Or did it occur as a result of a long labour?

Bigoldwimp · 28/09/2019 08:59

@Teddybear45 thankfully I’m bog standard. No conditions, easy pregnancies , yes long labours but not unusually long and no heart conditions in either child that we know of
