Vomiting after breast feeding!?

My LO (little one) is 7 weeks old and has been breastfeeding without shields for about a week.

He seems to vomit frequently immediately post feeds - it sounds like he going to burp and then a few mouthfuls of sick is spewed up and sometimes it looks like its a lot of what he's just eaten!

I've tried making sure his latch is deep and giving infacol before feeds. He also is on gaviscon half sachet morning and night - I don't know whether this needs increasing?

Does anybody else experience this? Is it just hes eating too much? Should I be stopping him to burp him more frequently?
He also munches his fists and wants to go back to the breast after vomiting does this mean he's chucked all of it up?

Tia

Why gaviscon, is he in pain?

I would defo burp more and maybe have a look at your diet, do you eat alot of dairy? Or drink cows milk? As maybe little one is intolerant to these or possibly something else and is causing the reflux.

Keep him upright for 40 minutes after feeding or during a feed - some kids just need longer to burp. Is he gaining weight appropriately? If yes then probably minor but if no then you may need to supplement with formula as it’s thicker and so sits better with reflux

Normal. Most babies seem to do this, a bit of air comes up and loads of milk with it.
You can try feeding him with him in a slightly more upright position, and burping him a couple of times through the feed. This helped with my dd who did this a lot.

Yes, I second taking him off mid-feed to wind him. Then keep him upright for a good while after the feed.

Try not to burp him by patting. I found rubbing in circular motions resulted in less vomit coming up with the gas! 😁

Normal, so long as he's not in pain with it and is gaining weight with plenty of wet and dirty nappies. If you're worried speak to your GP or health visitor.

Have you tried without the infacol? I found it made DD's reflux much worse. And no need to give up breastfeeding - unless of course you want to.

This is normal. It's not vomiting, but posseting. As long as he's not in pain, it's more a laundry problem than a health problem.

Have you got a bit of oversupply & a fast let down OP? I did, baby got a facefull at the start of the feed & would get a bit gulpy and take in too much air etc. I found sometimes better to hand express a little before putting baby on, he coped with flow better, less wind = less posseting.

Not sure about the advice from the previous poster about switching to formula as thicker and better for reflux... that sounds a bit like bollocks to me Hmm

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 20/09/2019 09:11

Ps also if it is a bit of dairy sensitivity or similar... formula is going to make it worse, not better! Its harder to digest and harder on babies tummies.

If you are happy bf OP & baby is gaining weight there's almost never a need to switch from bf to formula. Obv if you are not happy bf then do what works for you Wink

Breast milk contains something that helps reflux. I second feeding the baby in a more up right position and keeping baby upright after a feed. My reflux baby wasn't a burper but if I winded him to much he'd be sick (more than a mouth full or two). He also had gaviscon but 1 sachet after during every breast feed. He probably want more food after he's been sick to soothe his throat. Could he be over feeding because he's not learnt how to suck with releasing milk?
