The Happy Ending?

Hey😊

So all you hear of are the horror birth stories were women tore from back to front, emergency c-sections, and so many others that women are oh so keen to tell you! I mean fair enough, if I'd been through something on the same level as a shark attack and survived, I'd pull that card all the time too!

I guess what I'm looking for is the happier stories, the easy births where there were no tears, no poops and you left the hospital mere hours later looking like Kate Middleton (okay, maybe not quite all fairytale but some good birth stories would be reassuring!)

Xxx

I had my first baby 3 months ago, I was anxious as soon as I knew I was pregnant and someone recommended Hypnobirthing to me. It really helped ease my anxiety and prepare for labour!

I had a pretty straightforward labour - woke up at 2:30am needing a wee - sat on the loo and thought ooh maybe this is a contraction?! Went and laid back in bed to relax but realised they were getting stronger quickly, managed them all with my breathing I’d learnt in the bed/bath/birthing ball until 8am when I suddenly thought I want to push!
We got to maternity triage where sadly they said I was bleeding more than they would like so would need continual monitoring so couldn’t use the pool as planned. But I was 8cms so they said I’d obviously been dilating fast and that I could totally do the rest on G&A and baby would soon be here. I didn’t find that I helped me and when pushing I didn’t find that bit painful as I was so focused! I pushed for 2.5 hours in the end but it flew by and there was no panic I just had to give so much effort to getting him round that U bend !

I loved meeting my boy for the first time. I remember it all with complete clarity and it’s a memory I’ll cherish forever ❤️

I did have an episiotomy but I didn’t find recovery too uncomfortable and felt totally back to myself after 6 weeks 😊

Loved it and can’t wait to do it again one day I hope 🤞🏼

Good luck- you’ll be fine!!

I had a sweep in the afternoon. Felt a bit funny that night and couldn't eat. Went to bed and woke at half 3 with pains and knew it was contractions. Was contracting every two minutes from the beginning the contractions just got more painful and longer. Set off for hospital at 9.15 was monitored for 20 mins before I was examined and mw was very surprised I was 7 cm. Finally got some gas and air which was amazing. Pushing from 10am and DD born at 10.30. One small stitch. Definitely didn't look like Kate M om my way out though. Best advice a friend gave me was to let the contractors happen and zone out they are definitely more painful when you are tense and anticipating them, although easier said than done.

Forgot to say very good luck you will be fine

At 11pm I was putting together contingency plan for child care as I was convinced baby was nowhere near arriving and MIL could only stay to look after DD for two more days.
Woke up at 2am with waters popping. Contractions started at 2.30 frequent but manageable - took some paracetamol and got a bit more sleep. In hospital at 7am - painful but manageable. Was told I was only 2cm but they decided to keep me in as it was a 2nd baby. Gas and air and breathing made it all manageable.
Around 9.30 I could feel that I was transitioning so moved to a delivery suite and DS was born at 10.00am Very little input from the midwives - my body just took over and half an hour of pushing with a bit of gas and air and it was done.

I was home by 8pm (could’ve gone earlier but wanted to stay for dinner as we had no food in 🙂)

Didn’t get to use the pool as planned because he came so quickly there was no time to fill it! Did get a lovely bath in my own home that evening tho!

I did need some stitches but that really isn’t a problem. I was up and about chasing after toddler after a week.

Good luck OP

The day my 2nd was born was the best day of my life. I had a fairly long latent phase and a quick active labour. Held it together, laboured at home on my own through the night while DH and DD slept and then off to the maternity unit in the morning with half an hour to spare. Pushed my (large) baby out leaning over the bed, with a bit of gas and air. I felt so in control, so supported. Once he was out I felt immediately elated and bowled over with love for him. I was on a total high for days after that. I wish I could bottle that feeling and it makes me a little sad to think that (if all goes according to plan) I won't have it ever again.

seeingdots · 05/09/2019 21:40

Oh yeah and no tears, no poops, and was back home for dinner time.

Wishing you a good birth too OP!

christmasmum · 05/09/2019 21:44

I had my second in a beautifully lit, calm room at the midwife led unit. Got in the huge bath at about 4 in the morning, didn't need any other pain relief and my son arrived at 7am. Was home by 7pm that evening and he slept from 10pm to 7am, despite our attempts to wake and feed him!

Flamingo84 · 05/09/2019 22:14

I gave birth last year for the first time and I was really worried in the run up. I started listening to a hypnobirthing mp3 at bedtime which really helped me feel calm. My birth ended up being such an amazing experience that I really regret not videoing it (I always thought those women were nuts!)

My waters broke at 7am but I didn’t have any contractions so after speaking to the clinic they told me to stay home and if nothing happened to go in at 6pm for a check and to book an induction. I had a bit of a panic at the thought of an induction but just tried to settle in.

I took a shower, watched TV, went online, called the parents to let them know what was happening. Then we had lunch and still nothing. At about 2.30pm I noticed a bit of blood on my pad so called the unit and they wanted me to go in.

Spoke to the midwife, showed her the pad and she said it was fine. She said she’d put me on the list for an induction the next day and I’d get a call by 11am. They said baby was back to back so I could try bouncing on a ball or rocking on all fours to move him but I was fine to go home.

After getting back home DH blew up the ball while I went to try to have a nap. As I was lying there I noticed a slight tightening feeling every now and again. I started timing them and they were for almost a minute and 2 mins apart. I went downstairs and had a bounce on the ball while explaining to DH. I wasn’t in any pain it just felt like a pulling/tense feeling. DH and I faffed about for a few more minutes trying to figure out if it was contractions and I called the unit again. They asked me to come in so off we went again at about 5pm.

I had my first painful contraction whilst waiting to be examined in the delivery room. I asked for pain relief and the midwife said she wanted to examine me first. I don’t know who was more surprised her or me when she said I was 7cm dilated!

I wanted a pool birth so she quickly started filling it up while I huffed a bit of gas and air. I got into the pool, ditched the gas and she dimmed the lights within minutes I was pushing. I didn’t scream/cry/screech like you see on TV, I was a silent determined pusher. He was on his side as he hadn’t turned completely so it took a fair few pushes to get his head out but on the next push his body followed and he was born at 7.40pm.

We were left in the birthing suite to have tea and toast and I had a quick shower then we were settled in a private bedroom (which I was thrilled about!) by 10pm. They gave us the option of going home that night but I wanted to try to establish breast feeding so we ended up staying for a few days. The only issue I had was that as it all happened so quickly, I couldn’t stop shaking for a few hours after. I just had lots of unused adrenaline that had nowhere to go.

I did have a 2nd degree tear but I had so much adrenaline running through me I didn’t feel a thing! They stitched me up and although a bit uncomfortable it wasn’t bad, I was wearing my pre-pregnancy skinny jeans on my birthday a week later.

I found out later that I had a precipitous labour which is a birth under 3hrs from the start of contractions. My hospital bags were still in the car during the birth so I didn’t end up using any of the things I’d packed expecting a long labour!

I found the whole experience so empowering. I felt like I could do anything after that.

Every birth is different, I think all we can do is read up on what we’d like to happen but be prepared for it all to change. I just concentrated on my relaxation and breathing which really helped me.

I hope everything goes smoothly for you OP.

WhoArtinHeaven · 08/09/2019 09:21

Both my births were pretty positive, but my second was AMAZING!

Woke up to my waters breaking at 00:30. Contractions started almost immediately. Laboured at home (with my TENS machine) until going into birth centre around 4am. Lovely calm atmosphere and dim lights. Into birth pool at around 6am and baby born 20 minutes later after a few pushes.

Small tear, but I felt amazing afterwards and was home less than 12hrs after my waters had broken. Stopped off at shops on the way home to get groceries.

Thanks for this thread OP. I'm 37 weeks with my third and reading up on positive birth experiences too after a difficult first.

Reading some of the experiences on this thread has really helped focus my mind.

Good luck op!

faelavie · 15/09/2019 21:22

Thanks OP for starting this thread and thanks to those who have shared their positive experiences. I've read so many traumatic birth stories that I'm really stressed about my upcoming birth. I'm terrified tbh so it's good to read the better stories!

Frizzy1986 · 16/09/2019 18:53

Im genuinely not sure why you think that a tear or poop means a horror story. A lot of births have issues, but it doesn't mean it was bad.

I had a very positive birth experience but it didn't go perfectly. However the recovery was not an issue and it hasn't had a negative impact on me at all.

I started with cramps at 37 weeks pregnant. Didn't think much of them to be honest. They were intermittant and irregular for a few days.
Then they became painful one night but I paced it out while dh slept. As they were still irregular and varied so much (plus I'm not good with pain) I assumed they were braxton hicks as I was only 37+4 so it was too early to be labour, right.
In the morning I went for a wee and my waters went. It was 9am. That's when full on contractions started.
At the birth centre by 10am with contractions coming every 2-3 mins.
I was checked and was 6cm having had no pain relief (and being a wimp with pain)
I had dd at 10:49am after 15 mins of pushing. It was a wonderful water birth with only gas and air. I'd done no hypnobirthing or breathing practice or anything. I totally winged it.
I tore, quite badly, had no idea until I was checked. I had surgery, stayed a night and went home.
It was uncomfortable yes, but even people who don't tear can be sore, your bits have been through a lot remember.
I've had no lasting issues and am now excitedly awaiting labour for #2.

I wouldn't consider my birth a horror story at all and I'd hate to think that other people would just because I tore.

PuffHuffle5 · 16/09/2019 19:15

My waters broke at 2 in the morning and DS arrived at 7 am, so that was pretty good going (1st baby as well - they always say your first labour will take ages!) I started off at the birthing centre but had a little bleed and was sent to the hospital as a precaution - but even that wasn’t so bad, I felt like the ambulance ride sort of broke up the time a bit. I had an episiotomy which I didn’t feel and didn’t even hurt that much when the anaesthetic wore off either. Who knows, I may have pooed but I wouldn’t know to be honest, neither did I care Grin contractions hurt like hell as they came on so fast, but I’d still prefer a fast labour to a slow one and after it all I felt very proud of myself, so overall a pretty good experience I’d happily do it again Smile

PuffHuffle5 · 16/09/2019 19:18

Oh but I definitely didn’t leave the hospital looking like Kate Middleton. I’ve probably never looked so shit, but neither had I ever cared so little which is very liberating and feels great in itself actually Grin

BarleyG · 17/09/2019 10:26

My labour started with one big contraction and from then on they were consistently 2 minutes apart. I went upstairs and rocked on all fours on the bed for a while while the ex husband played Xbox Hmm and after a couple of hours I text him to ask him to come upstairs. He phoned the hospital a couple of times and they said wait at home, don’t come in, we’re busy etc. But I knew I needed to go so we turned up anyway! Lucky we did as I was 9cm dilated and my daughter was born an hour later. No pain relief whatsoever, I found it easy Grin I’m hoping for an easy birth again this time but maybe not quite so quick!

BarleyG · 17/09/2019 10:28

Oh, and yes I did poo! I also tore but I didn’t feel it at all. The stitching didn’t hurt either

TequilaMockingbird0 · 17/09/2019 10:30

I'd massively recommend The Positive Birth Company, there is an associated facebook group and every day people share more positive birth stories.
If anybody starts telling you a horror story, I'd walk away. And spend lots of time googling positive stories, there are plenty on the internet.
