Future births after retained placenta

Hi ladies

I’m new to all this but I haven’t seen or heard anyone talk about this so...
Just wondering what happened to any other mums who had a retained placenta in a previous delivery. Or what to expect with future pregnancies/deliveries.
I’m not currently pregnant but I’m curious to know!

Thank you to anyone who reads this!
Xx

Hey! I had a retained placenta with my last baby. I haven't given birth to this one yet (not long to go! 🤞🏻) but this time round I've had a few appointments with the consultant to keep track of things. So far the only differences are that I have to use the hospital rather than a birth centre; they plan to put a line into my hand during labour so that afterwards if the placenta doesn't come along they can hook me straight up to a syntocinon drip; active third stage is necessary. The consultant said it was extremely unlikely that it would happen again 🤞🏻

Hey Thegoldgrind
Thanks for getting back to me! Sounds like it hasn’t changed much for you, I’m hoping mines the same when the time comes! Did they talk about a planned C-section at all? It was mentioned to me by midwives.
Just a bit worried cause I ended up having a blood transfusion literally 10 minutes after giving birthSad
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and hope all goes well for you and bubba
X

No talk of a section for me, just putting plans in place to stop blood loss at an earlier stage. Last time was 2.3L lost, a GA and 3 hours in theatre so definitely hoping for better this time!

girlsyearapart · 22/08/2019 15:56

I didn’t have it with babies 1 or 4 but I did with 2 and 3.
The first time was worst I had to go into surgery for MROP had PPH and a blood transfusion
Luckily the next time the staff were prepared for it and managed to get it out before surgery necessary.
I was so worried about it my first words once the baby was born was ‘ is the placenta out?’ Hmm

Hoppinggreen · 22/08/2019 15:57

I had one first time and it was awful. 3 MW and 1 Reg all had a go, very painful and meant I couldn’t hold my baby. The Consultant arrived and said to stop, she actually said “ what on Earth are you all doing to this poor lady, book an OR now!”
With my second I made sure the MW was very aware of what happened and she really took her time and managed to remove it, at one point the cord broke and she didn’t think she would be able to but eventually she did.

I'm keen to read everyone stories on this as im 7 weeks post partum and I had a horrendous time with my retained placenta. I feel like it ruined my birthing experience and after being rummaged around inside for over an hour (with only gas and air) before being taken to theatre it really tainted it all.

EsmeMummy18 · 22/08/2019 16:07

Exactly like me then! I’m just glad I had pain relief before they started MROP, I feel for women who don’t have time for any.
I just wonder if being induced had anything to do with itHmm...I was put on a hormone drip and have heard that it can stop the placenta coming out. But I didn’t ask if my placenta was completely embedded or not!

Hey 20viona
Bless you! It is very traumatic going through something like that and you just don’t realise how much it affects you mentally either! Have you spoken to anyone about it? I didn’t and I regret it now because it definitely hit me. I was adamant I wasn’t having anymore but a year on has changed my mind!

I was induced but only with pessarys and once they broke my waters she was born in 2 hours. It was fast and furious and painful 😂
I honestly don't think I'd even heard of retained placenta before it happened to me! Only 2% of births end up with MROP apparently so we are a very unlucky bunch lol.

Summer2019NewMummy · 22/08/2019 17:38

I'm 5 weeks postpartum and had to have MROP. I wasn't induced. Really hope this won't happen if we decide to have another.

EsmeMummy18 · 22/08/2019 17:50

Midwives and doctors need to make more women aware of it! I’d never heard of it and many other people haven’t.

@EsmeMummy18 I totally agree I thought I was clued up on what could happen during labour, obviously not! It's quite traumatic and I don't think people understand than who haven't experienced it.

girlsyearapart · 22/08/2019 21:15

I’m not sure if it’s a fluke or if it may be genetic but my mum and sister have both had it
Btw none of us have been induced

EsmeMummy18 · 23/08/2019 07:37

I know! When people have asked how my labour went and I’ve told them what happened they’re like “oh ok sounds rough”. Inside I’m thinking no you don’t understand I could’ve diedShock
I thought could it be genetic but no one in my family has had it. Just down to bad luck which is typical for me😂

I had problems with retuned placenta with my 3 daughters but not my son - child no 3.

DD1 spontaneous labour, PPH then D&C 10 weeks later to remove retained products.

Was told for all subsequent births - not allowed in water and had to have a cannula in my hand from early stages of labour. They also had extra of my blood type on stand by.

DD2 induced. Retained placenta, taken to theatre just after birth for a general anaesthetic to remove it.

DS spontaneous labour. No issues at all.

DD3 induced. They thought placenta was complete. 2 weeks later very ill and put on antibiotics and passed a large lump of retained products at home. Had an ultrasound and all clear.

So induction didn’t affect mine but sex of the baby did 🤷🏼‍♀️

Drabarni · 25/08/2019 16:25

Hi, one of ours I had a retained placenta and a manual removal.
came close on the next one, but as soon as I heard the midwife say we'll have to call upstairs (meaning a doctor) I pushed hard and out it came.
our first kids were born with no problems.

Mummyxo18 · 25/08/2019 16:37

Ahh very interesting! Thank you for replies! It’s meant to be uncommon but you hear so many people having it!

Kittywittle88 · 30/08/2019 17:42

Hi, I had retained placenta after the birth of both my boys and and massive pph causing them to take me to theatre to remove it under anaesthetic. I had four blood transfusions with my first and seven with my second. I had them both young, I am now 31 and just found out I'm pregnant.
My partner is not the father of my boys and we've been together two years and I really want this baby but have no idea how to avoid it happening again.

MaximusHeadroom · 30/08/2019 17:45

I had it after DC1. DC2 was c-section but for different reasons and DC3 was emcsec.

I was told I couldn't try a HB with DC2 because of retained placenta but could have tried vbac if she hadn't been breech.

Kittywittle88 · 30/08/2019 19:24

Thanks for the reply, I'm just worried because I was in critical condition after both births and in hospital for over a week. Could you tell me what emcsec means please? Sorry I'm new am new to the acronyms x
