Does this sound like back to back labour?

I’ve not long had my baby and it was so painful I knew it was going to be but it was much worse than I expected.

  1. I only back laboured I couldn’t move or talk when I was having a contraction
  2. The last 2 hours I was having non stop contractions for 1-2 min every 30-60 seconds
  3. I really struggled to get the head out I almost needed assistance.
  4. I got a huge contraction then 30 seconds later a mini contraction which happened every time I felt like I didn’t get a break

Sorry to scare anyone who’s due to give birth I need to know if this is standard as it’d really put me off more kids which we always wanted more 😊

Sounds similar to mine although it ended in EMCS & I did get stomach as well as back pains. Contraction wise the same x

I swear my first labour was back to back, all the pain was in my lower back and I've even got a weird kind of inside out scar near my coccyx. Second time around was all in my stomach and was a breeze in comparison.

FoxAndTheBear · 18/08/2019 22:45

Wow! So do most people just get contractions in their stomach ?

I dont know about back to back specifically, but I think first labour is often a shocker because you have no frame of reference. I coped a lot better with 2nd and third even though still, always shocking how much pain a person can endure without dying

kayakingmum · 18/08/2019 22:55

My second baby was born back to back. It was more painful than when I had my first (who wasn't back to back) and I almost needed assistance.
I think you would be unlucky to have two back to back labours. It's a shame your midwife didn't tell you if it was a back to back delivery. Don't let it put you off having another baby.

RebeccaCloud9 · 18/08/2019 22:58

Mine has faded into a blur now (nearly 5 years ago) but I remember just non stop pain, i would have a contraction that was utterly debilitating, but then also have constant lower abdomen pain (all around, front back and sides). There was no relief when contractions ended.

Shadow1986 · 18/08/2019 22:58

Yes it could have been but it could have been the same for a normal Labour too.
When the babies head came out did you not see which direction it was facing, and did they not say to you it was back to back? My last baby was back to back but they didn’t know. I struggled so much to get the head out, I was saying he was stuck but no one taking any notice, eventually managed to get his head out and he was facing up looking at me! And then they all said ‘oh you were right he was a bit stuck, he’s facing the wrong way!’

FoxAndTheBear · 18/08/2019 23:01

Shadow1986 they didn’t say anything but I was pushing when I got to the birthing suite so they had no time to check. Everytime I got the top of her head out it went back in.

Mine was back to back, the pain was all in my back constantly with a top up of abdominal pain when I had a contraction. Even once the epidural was in contractions still hurt. She partly turned (I knew this because the pain lessened), but then got stuck and had to be turned and pulled out with forceps.

Praying my next labour (if I have another one) is better!!!!

youaremysunshine · 18/08/2019 23:12

Not sure about back to back so i cant offer any advice but had the most horrific leg pain in labour, not sure if that normal or not but it was awfull.

Squashpocket · 18/08/2019 23:21

Sounds exactly the same as my first birth. Not sure if it was back to back, maybe just my body not being very good at it the first time round? Kind of like it didn't find a rhythm. Second labour: totally fine, nowhere near as painful, lovely regular contractions which were only in the bump, nice long breaks in between, 2 pushes, no tearing. I couldn't believe it was the same process honestly.

gamerchick · 18/08/2019 23:25

That sounds like a back to back labour. My first was like that. The body turns baby around before delivery and it feels relentless at the time.

My 2 births after that were normal though. No backpain. It was so much more comfortable by having babies standards.

MollyHuaCha · 18/08/2019 23:33

3 x back to back here.

I guess that's how my body chooses to deliver.

littlepeaegg · 18/08/2019 23:47

Back to back here (star gazer!) and at 28weeks gestation.

I was allowed no pain relief because of how premature my ds was. And all my pain was in back mainly. I was allowed a heated bean bag Hmm didn't really do much though!!

I also had to push even when I didn't have contractions. But not sure if that was because they needed him out due to heart rate.

MumsyMum31 · 20/08/2019 10:18

Had a horrendous back to back labour, didn’t even know what that was! Contractions started 7 mins apart then 3 then 5 they were all over the place! Pain felt like it was in my bottom had no abdominal pain all in my bottom! Only relief I got was from epidural I couldn’t speak or stand during a contraction! In hindsight I’m glad I didn’t know about back to back! But was worth it for DD! ❤️

FoxAndTheBear · 20/08/2019 11:25

DH has said baby came out face up so she must have been back to back. I feel for all of you it’s almost put me off anymore kids. Of course she’s worth it all I hope next time this doesn’t happen

My first was back to back, also pushing into the sciatic nerve. Never known pain like it, every contraction felt like my spine was being pulled apart and then it went down into my legs making them lock up. I kept getting stuck on the birthing ball.

Annoyingly enough dc2 who wasn't back to back still had me contracting in my back because of the shape of my pelvis.

Although both mine ended up as emergency sections.

Mintypea5 · 20/08/2019 15:24

Both my labours have been back to backs. Very painful and all the pain in my back really not much in my front but didn't have any issues pushing baby out when the time came.

Shadow1986 · 20/08/2019 20:18

So she was face up when she was born OP, she must have been back to back then. Surprised they didn’t say anything to you!
Dont let it put you off more if you want more, you managed it! I’m sure next time would be easier.
