Water Birth with Gestational Diabetes -success?

I'm only 16 weeks but am borderline gestational diabetes and will definitely have it at the 26 week GTT. I had GD in my last pregnancy and was refused a waterbirth.
When it came to giving birth, I laboured in my bath at home for about 4 hours then went to hospital where baby was born without complications inside an hour. Baby was smaller than average despite scans saying she would be a chunk.

I dont see myself being at a significant enough risk to be fairly denied a waterbirth again this time but my NHS trust has a blanket policy for people with GD. I'm also aware it's likely to be a quick birth as the first was pretty quick and the 2nd is traditionally much quicker so I want to be able to go to hospital when I need to (last time they kept saying to stay home on the phone when really I should have been on the labour ward as was nearly fully dilated) but dont wanna be unable to be in warm water as it was absolutely key to tolerating the pain last time.

So has anybody ever fought the NHS law and won? Any tips for pushing my case?
I'd love to hear any success stories out there .

Thanks xx

I had GD with my second and asked about water births or at least the mid wife led unit. I think they were open to the mid wife led unit as long as my blood sugars were well controlled without medication. I can’t remember what they said about water birth sorry. In the end DD2 was born so quickly there wouldn’t have been time for either (she was almost born in the waiting room triage area...)

My friend had well-controlled GD (diet controlled) and she had a water birth in the hospital MLU.

Thanks for your replies, my GD had to be controlled with meds last time so it looks like my chances are slim! X

I was diet controlled and a water birth was an outright no.

My first was a GD baby and I was told I could go to the MLU if I remained diet controlled all throughout my pregnancy. When it came to it the midwifes were not sure and needed to make calls about it so if I were you I would get it put in my notes and get booked it at the MLU as soon as you can. As it happened I needed to be induced with an EMCS but that was nothing to do with GD so I don't know about pushing the issue but my feeling is they wouldn't have allowed it if I had gone into labour naturally.
