My baby is 4 weeks old and I am signed off from midwives but I don't think everything is right with me down there. My back passage is protruding well into my vagina and I'm getting pretty constipated as a result. Delightful. I went to the GP yesterday who said the protrusion was because I was constipated but I disagree, I feel like the protrusion is causing the constipation. I'd like to see a midwife or women's health person rather than another GP but as I'm signed off from everyone I feel like I'm stuck. Called health visitors today who said to go to A&E which feels a bit drastic.

Has anyone else had this? Any suggestions on how to get this checked by someone from women's health?

If the health visitor said go to A&E then go. No NHS professional recommends A&E as an option unless it’s required.

Thanks @teddybear45. I wish I had said something to the midwives now. They sign you off so quick, hadn't realised things weren't quite right until now.Sad

Go back to your GP and ask (force) them to refer you to a women's health physio. You do not need to still be under the midwives for this to happen. Don't let them fob you off because it can take a while to get an appointment so you want to get in the system.

Do bear in mind though that 4 weeks post partum is really really not long in recovery terms. Im sure some women are "fine" by then but many (me included) take months and months for the pelvic floor to get back to some semblance of normality - which is entirely usual. I assume you are doing pelvic floor exercises, these will help gradually (and physio will help with that too). Hopefully the wall will gradually get stronger and go back to where it's supposed to be. In the mean time, try to avoid getting constipated so that you don't have to push when going to the loo which will not help your pelvic muscles recover. It's a bit of a vicious circle. Take whatever the GP suggested to prevent constipation.

Thanks @ritapetita much appreciated. I'm not the kind of person who rushes to a doctor for nothing so thanks for the vote of confidence! I've got myself an appointment lined up to get checked out now which is good. I'm a 1st time mum, I did do NCT classes but 90% of the focus was on the birth which only takes up such a small (but obviously significant!) portion of time with your baby. For me the hardest part of this first month has been getting to grips with feeding and understanding what my post baby body is doing and trying to work out if it is 'normal'. Whatever 'normal' means! Thanks again for the input.

So they think everything will resolve if you get the constipation under control? In that case did they give you anything to help? The go to seems to be lactulose, but that's never worked for me and some others I know.

I also wouldn't recommend upping your fibre because this will bulk up your stools and it doesn't sound like that will help. If I were you I'd start by taking some milk of Magnesia. This will make your stools very easy to pass and you'll be able to see if things feel more normal after. Good luck.

Could of written exactly the same thing as you @AldiNappies! Only just noticed that is what's happened as I can feel a lump, been a bit constipated recently too
