Freaking out about induction

So I'm due to be induced with baby no.5 on Friday, last baby was induced with just the pessary and was over and done with in around 5 hours or so, no problems. This time though, the consultant has decided they're not going to go with the pessary, just going to break my waters with the hook and then give me a drip if contractions don't start. I'm not too sure I like the sound of that to be honest, I've heard it's more painful that way 🙄 and I don't really relish what the consultant described as "basically, a crochet hook" being rammed up my vagina 😄 just looking for reassurance that's it's not as horrific as it sounds, tbh.

I had the drip and I’d advise an epidural as you can get really random contractions that come on with full force early on.

Did you ask why you couldn’t do the pessary again?

troppibambini · 07/08/2019 19:03

I've got four dc and was induced with 2 and 3. I had a pessary with the first one but I didn't really start contracting but my cervix did open enough for them to break my waters. I have had my waters broken three times and I honestly didn't feel a thing (except wet!) it was less uncomfortable than having the pessary put in.
If I could avoid the drip I would though, I had it with the first induction and it was quite brutal. I had an epidural.
As pp said I would want to know why they are doing it this way and I would ask if you could have the pessary.

I was dilated enough I didn’t need the pessary. They broke my waters and it was totally fine. Hooked me up to the drip right away and the contractions started, I went just with gas and air for a good while so it couldn’t have been too bad...only labour ive had though so didn’t know any different! Don’t worry about the hook thing though!

happytoday73 · 07/08/2019 19:16

Don't worry about the hook thing... Just look the other way if wave it about beforehand... Its really not bad and water breaking helped my contractions along nicely so hopefully you won't need the drip.
Agree with others... If do need drip in end ask if can have epidural at same time or they limit it as it it can really cause full on major contractions very rapidly and for me this was the most painful part of birth. 2nd didn't have drip and felt much less and far more manageable

You don't have to agree to do it that way if you don't want to. They can advise you (and should fully explain all options, risks etc), but ultimately it's your choice.

Shelbybear · 07/08/2019 21:11

If ur not against an epidural tell them u want one in advance. The hook thing u don't feel at all don't worry about that.

It's that drip it's evil! I'd ask if they will let u get a chance to go into labour after the break ur waters. They just hooked me up to it right away. It felt like I went from nothing to 100 instantly. I thought I was going to deliver my baby within the hour, turns out I only got as far as 3-4cms after 12hrs 🙈

NotSoThinLizzy · 07/08/2019 21:18

I was induced with DS just by them breaking my waters didnt feel anything just a trickle as they broke.

HeartShapedBox · 07/08/2019 22:31

That's reassuring that it's not painful to have the waters broken. I'll definitely ask about the epidural, although last time they wouldn't even give me gas and air and the baby was pretty much born in the corridor so I won't hold my breath! Apparently I'm already dilated enough that the pessary is unnecessary, and as far as I know the drips only for if my contractions don't start of their own initiative. I'll be right on that ball asap to try and avoid the drip 😄

From what you say I think they will break your waters and within a couple of hours baby will be there... No need for drip or epidural... Hope it works out like that! Grin

20viona · 08/08/2019 15:19

My waters were extremely painful to have broken and I needed gas and air. I was 3cm dilated at this point but my cervix was posterior. Don't be afraid to ask for gas and air if you need it.

troppibambini · 08/08/2019 15:53

Hopefully they will just need to break your waters and that will be enough.
But if they don't and you do need the drip just say that you want the epidural put in first, that's what I did with my second induction.
Ime they really encourage you to have an epidural with the drip.

troppibambini · 08/08/2019 15:54

Sorry with my first induction! Too many babies I lose track Grin

BottomleyPottsSpots2 · 08/08/2019 21:55

I think with your history I'd be surprised if you needed the drip to get going.

I had my membranes ruptured with DS (3rd child), about 30 mins monitoring then they sent me and DH for a walk, during which contractions started. We got back after an hour or so and I gave birth 10 mins later. No need for drip, no time for pain relief ... honestly it was the best experience. I really hope that yours is similarly straightforward.
