castor oil. has worked for my grandmother's 4 children, my mum's 4 children, and my 3 children. Every single time without fail, you need to take about 5 mls, and then another 5 mls about 30 mins later. It is disgusting, but within an hour of doing this, I have been in labour every time. good luck. Or you could just wait and have lots of lovely warm baths and chill out and relax!

HermyGrain · 01/08/2007 14:17

I've been looking into this myself - exactly the same - 37 weeeks by due date, 39 weeks by my dates.
Also I was up two nights last week with contractions that led no-where!
Try this link it gives loads of info -www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/labourandbirth/planningyourbabysbirth/naturalbringonlabour/

  • sorry for huge link . The nipple stimulation thing is completely true though - and proven! Except that to have guaranteed results you need to stimulate for 15 mins every hour!! But It's true - I'll try anything now, and every time I do it, it brings on almost immediate braxton hicks!! - must be a good thing.

book a haircut/waxing/anything.

you won't make it.

MrsScavo · 01/08/2007 15:09

LOL, I made it to the manicure, pedicure, blow dry etc However, I did look lovely when I went in to be induced.

reensal · 20/09/2008 12:36

I've heard that castor oil is dangerous to use? Apparently can cause the baby to become distressed and pass meconium while still in the womb. Prob best ask your midwife before trying!!

Anglepoise · 20/09/2008 19:57

I'm 40+5 and so far have tried:

sex twice
membrane sweep
aquanatal
nipple stimulation most of last night
at least two long walks
pineapple until my mouth burned
half a dozen baths
curry until - well, ow
MNing on a birthing ball
pedicure and a haircut
sod's law
and acupuncture

and I am heartily fed up!

And just to help out, my cousin is over from NYC to view the baby, so I have until 5 am Monday to cough up the goods. And DH would have liked the baby born today (his late dad's birthday). And I should be at a ten year college reunion having fun right now but RSVPed no in the end. Meh

AnnVan · 20/09/2008 20:49

I tried nearly everything - they didn't work and i refused induction. Finally had baby boy on tuesday at 40+17!

Ohforfoxsake · 20/09/2008 20:54

That baby will come when its ready, I'm afraid. Sorry, after going 40 + 13 and trying everything I've come to the conclusion that bugger all works

Instead of trying to get things moving (and driving yourself slowly mad, you might have as much as 6 weeks to go) how about thinking of all the positive things you could be doing before he or she gets here?

broodymom · 20/09/2008 22:22

With dd1 sex early morning and my waters broke about hour after i was 40+4 but on the downside to this because we had sex and my waters broke at home i got a bad infection and needed anitbiotics during labour.

With dd2 me and hubby siting on floor at home playing PS2 . I was sitting sort of lotus position on my bottom with my feet together instead of crossed, i had been that way for a couple of hours (not trying to induce labour just the way i sit) and i kept getting sort of shooting pains so went to bed, jumped up a couple of hours later thinking i needed a pee had a huge gush and my waters broke! DD2 was born on due date

Lotster · 21/09/2008 22:32

I hesitate to recommend what worked for me as I think it may have contributed to my fast and painful dilation, but I really wanted to avoid induction and I know it worked...

Within 24 hours of taking the homeopathy remedy Caullophyllum (I was 40+9),I started getting Braxton Hicks lasting up to 3 mins a time then was in labour by 11pm the next night. Although I laboured at home till going in to hospital at 7am where they declared mestill in "pre-labour and not dilated, I went 0cm - 10cm in 3 hours fifty minutes after arrival, which took everyone by surprise!

Wilur on the below thread has a similar experience and says you should only take it if you fit the type, (I'd also add only if are overdue and have no complications):

She had a caesarean and I was a forceps birth, but I think that had more to do with my son being back to back.

  • another heads up for acupuncture
  • i also drank tamarind tea - yuck, but my Ecuadorian friend recommended pouring boiling water over a pod straining and drinking.

Because I was desperate to have my baby due just before Xmas I did both these things on my due date

..my labour kicked in that night

I'm not sure which one may have done it perhaps the combination.

ajm200 · 22/09/2008 09:01

I tried everything last time, got some fairly strong contractions going that faded out after a very uncomfortable afternoon and evening.

Went into hospital, had 5 days of gel to ripen my cervix - did nothing much

Had my waters broken - did nothing expect make a mess on the floor

Eventually, got hooked up to drip and they ramped it right up to get my lazy DS moving.

He just wasn't ready... just shows babies are born when they are ready

vicky11 · 22/09/2008 20:56

I tried everything went into hospital to be induced had a bath with Clagy Sage in and within 5 minutes my waters broke!! Within 15 minutes I was having strong contractions and 12 hours later my ds was born!! (it's a powerful relaxant herb- in oil form)

MGMidget · 25/09/2008 11:07

I tried:
Rasberry leaf tea (building up the number of cups a day over a period of about 3-4 weeks)
Vindaloo curries
pineapple
reflexology
cervical sweeps (3)
long walks
sex
lobster (recommendation from a friend)

In the end the baby came after the third cervical sweep and a meal of lobster with a glass of champagne. I tried lobster on its own earlier in the week by my friend told me it didn't work without the champagne. It did seem to work second time round with the champagne but then again it might have been coincidence! A good excuse for a nice meal though! Lobster contains prostaglandin by the way - something that is used during the induction process in hospital. The lobster and champagne trick worked for her and she had tried it on recommendation from a friend.

acupunture worked a treat for DS who was ready to come out (so to speak) as waters had broken but nothing happened. DD stayed put regardless of acupunture and 3 sweeps (still stubborn feisty little thing)

gemdangracie · 25/09/2008 19:43

I had fish and chips (from the chip shop) the night before i went into labour (2 of my other friends tried it and it also worked for them)
I also had lots of long walks everyday from around 34 weeks and my DD was born 2 weeks early.. (maybe she was ready to come out you never will know)
