Tail bone pain

Does anyone still suffer with tail bone pain after childbirth?

I gave birth in November, admittedly I stayed on my back throughout labour as I was in too much pain to kneel (like I originally wanted to). Gave birth with no pain relief as gas & air made me sick and there was no time for the epidural.

Since then my tail bone had been extremely tender, even tight jeans make it ache. Sitting on hard chairs, if I stand up too quickly or sitting awkwardly all trigger it. The pain is sharp initially but can occasionally be a dull ache.

Has anyone else experienced this and had anything that helps? Physio/stretching etc.?

Yes! I believe it's possible to bruise (or even fracture) your coccyx during childbirth.

After birth of my daughter in January, I was so tender, exactly as you describe. It went on for weeks. I'm an idiot as completely forgot to mention during my six week check. However it did go away on it's own eventually. I couldn't say exactly when though as it was gradual.

I'd say if you gave birth in November then it might be worth speaking to GP - I'd suspect more than just bruising. Although I don't think they can do much about it, but that's a long time to be in pain, so worth getting checked out.

My coccyx fractured with each of my DC. They are now 20, 21, 25 and i still have to sit with my back to the wall on hard chairs in case someone knocks into me!

@Ifeelbloodyawful @MaMisled it feels like it's been completely pushed out of position! As you say I doubt they can do much for it, I had mentioned it at my 6week check but the midwife just said to give it time... you'd imagine in 8 moths it would have forged itself!

Yes I had this. Physio made no difference. Maybe try an osteopath experienced in treating postpartum women - that helped mine somewhat. Also the coccyx does just take ages to heal so will take months to feel better.

My coccyx fractured during labour but I could feel it moving about when I stood up or moved etc. I think it took 4 months or so to set and then over a year for it to stop hurting.

I did have physio and they can manually manipulate it back into place via your rectum if they think it has been displaced but its not a pleasant option! Other than that, time seems to be the best healer.

Currently expecting no. 2 in the next few weeks and hoping it doesn't happen again.
