Group B Strep stories

Hello ladies, I’m currently 37 weeks with baby no.4 and found out last week I have group B strep. I’ve never had it/ known that I had it with my last 3.
I was wondering what other people’s experiences were with it? I was told that I would be given antibiotics during labour, but do they test the baby for Strep B as soon as she’s born? How were your little ones? How long did you have to stay in hospital etc?
Any experiences will help give me an idea as to what to expect. Thank you x

I had group B strep with all 3 pregnancies.

1st DC there was complications and antibiotics not given in time during labour so DC and I had to stay in for 5 days for antibiotics (for baby) and I think a blood test but was all clear.

2nd and 3rd DCs all went fine I was put onto an antibiotic drip in labour and then everything else with labour and baby all normal. Just make sure when you go into labour the midwife is aware and then it's not really a big deal.

I had group b strep. Labour seemed to be progressing quickly and midwife advised "don't worry if we don't get 4 hours antibiotics done we can give them directly to baby"
They wanted to test him but really struggled to get blood. We were in for 2 days as I had a c section and as there were no signs of infection they didn't bother with blood test and told me to come back if any signs of being unwell. He was fine. I can't remember if he had antibiotics, but I had 2 sets during labour so possibly weren't needed.

It is my understanding the big danger is having group b strep and not knowing. I found that reassuring.

I had Group B strep, and was told I’d have 12 hours of IV antibiotics when I went into labour. Well, labour progressed too quickly and I barely had two hours. I was in a birth centre so they monitored baby for signs of infection every 2 hrs for 24 hrs then discharged us with info on the signs of GBS infection. DS and I were fine. Flowers

I had it, and still was allowed a water birth. Just had to keep the cannula out of the pool!

I had it with both pregnancies. Had anti biotics early enough with DS but 2nd labour with DD was too quick so only got them 2 hours before she arrived.

In both cases we were kept in for 48 hours to monitor baby's temperature and check for signs of infection. Both were absolutely fine.

As a PP said the riskier situations are where you don't know you have it and so don't have the anti biotics or the monitoring.

When are you meant to be tested for this? I’ve heard in the UK, if you go through NHS, you don’t usually get swabbed for it??

When did you ladies first hear you had it?

When did you ladies first hear you had it?

When my two day old DC was rushed into the NICU.

Spent 2 weeks on antibiotics and is now a teen.

I had a recurrent urinary infection that wouldn't shift with antibiotics. They sent it for a culture and it came back as group b strep. Midwife then recommended a swab which also came back positive.

I had it and have never quite figured out how it worked as ended up a crash c section at 31 weeks. It was picked up in a swab for bleeding a couple of days before. I think dts were just whacked in a load of antibiotics anyway due to their size and general infection risk.

I don't understand why we don't routinely test for others given it's so so common.
