Very scared ...

I gave birth 9 days ago now, forcep delivery, spinal block needed. I had a catheter in for over 24 hours. However up until 2 days ago I have literally lost all sensation of needing to urinate? When I try and go I only get a dribble come out even though I’m drinking loads ... please tell me I’m not the only one this has happened to and you all got your sensation back? If so when! I’m very worried!

It took a day or two after catheter removal to feel it was all working . How long since yours out - 8 days? If you are not weeing much you need to see someone - your bladder cant keep filling up indefinitely. They may need/ want a voiding chart( ie record when and how much ml you drink and ml wee for a day - need to wee in something you can then measure the wee from

mummy2be3619 · 20/06/2019 21:54

I had the catheter removed Wednesday night last week about 11pm ... it was only up until 2 days ago that I lost the sensation it was there after the removal but disappeared! :(

Can you call the maternity ward OP? It could be a UTI but it might also be that your bladder needs a rest (with a longer term catheter). You don’t want to go into retention so this needs investigating.

TheRedSquare · 20/06/2019 22:06

@mummy2be3619 I too had a forcep delivery and I worried as couldn't feel the sensation of needing the loo, so was making myself go hourly to be sure...the feeling does come back though once everything calms down 😊 then I wish I didn't feel like I need a wee alllllll the time 🙈
Your body has gone through so much, and down there took the brunt of it. Give it a couple more weeks. Just make sure you go hourly to be sure you aren't holding too much without knowing or my midwife said 2 hourly...but i was a regular pee'er before babe...hope your recovery is going well for you as horrible having forceps xx

TheRedSquare · 20/06/2019 22:08

Or like others have said run it past midwife/HV/GP for reassurance and to rule anything out x

littlecabbage · 20/06/2019 22:08

Please seek medical advice OP. I have heard of this happening and I believe it usually resolves, but it must be managed correctly until it does.

mummy2be3619 · 20/06/2019 22:12

Thank you everyone I will call gp in the morning! However I really can’t go hourly as when I try and we nothing comes out st all it’s strange :( ! I’m hoping it’s just a uti but i read that gives you the urge to wee which I’m not getting! X

Have you got any back pain? Leg pain? I agree you need medical advice.

SophiaLarsen · 20/06/2019 22:14

I'd call your maternity ward now and tell them. I would not wait til the morning.

Whyrmengreattiltheygottabgreat · 20/06/2019 22:18

Are you in pain, OP? How many mls roughly have you passed in the last 24 hours? If you’ve got an out of hours advice line it might be an idea to call.
Don’t want to worry you, but second PP re retention.

DinoMamasaurus · 20/06/2019 22:20

Definitely call your maternity ward now OP it’s what they are there for and they know the right questions to ask and what to do.

I had a kiwi cap delivery and catheter and I did lose the sensation of needing to pee for 48 hours or so but I was still able to pee in that time so wasn’t too worried. I just made sure I went often even though I didn’t feel like I needed to. I think that you are drinking but not able to pee much definitely needs a qualified opinion. Hope they can reassure you and it all resolves soon - this birth business can be very rough on our bodies!

User6949671 · 20/06/2019 22:23

I lost all sensation for nearly 2 months before it gradually returned. Oddly it was the only hang over I had! No pains or discomfort or anything else just no urge to pee! My Dr said as I didn't have a UTI or anything it would just have to be a wait and see thing.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 20/06/2019 22:27

This can't wait until the morning. It sounds as though you have acute urinary retention if you can only pee tiny amounts despite drinking loads. This can be very damaging to your bladder. I would be ringing 111 if I were you x

BunloafAndCrumpets · 20/06/2019 22:28

You need to call Mat ward now, sorry to worry you but this kind of thing gets much worse if you leave it. waiting til morning could be too long. You need to speak to someone tonight. Hope all goes ok

DharmaInitiativeLady · 20/06/2019 22:29

Or the maternity ward you are under. Hope you feel better soon OP x

Ohyesiam · 20/06/2019 22:31

Op, call your ward now, don’t wait till the morning x

TheRedSquare · 20/06/2019 22:33

@mummy2be3619 if you can't pass urine then i would speak to someone about that as that's not normal lovely. You should be able to pee...I weed normal amounts, I just couldn't feel the sensation for needing to go at all...ring your maternity ward number and ask for advice...they were great with me when I had to ring as I was quite unwell after, and they were lovely x

BakewellGin1 · 20/06/2019 22:40

You definately need it checking out, to ensure you are supported in recovery, however I am 3 months post delivery and only in past 2 weeks having any sensation of needing to pee/poo (three failed vontousse and third time lucky with forceps resulted in third degree tear and being cut)
It was a gradual return of feeling and for first few days had several accidents until I started going to try every hour in case.
I have been referred to consultant and am awaiting physio also..

MoreHairyThanScary · 20/06/2019 22:45

How much do you guess you have passed in the previous 24 hrs ? And how much have you been drinking?

There is a possibility that you have retention of urine and need another catheter at least in the short term ....

I agree with previous posters I think you need real life assessment and medical care.

MissSmiley · 20/06/2019 23:37

I've had this several times and it's caused by the painkillers for me, certain types trigger retention, you must call someone tonight and they will scan your bladder and possibly re catheterise you to release the pressure in your bladder
I hope you have already called for RL help

TheRedSquare · 21/06/2019 07:49

@mummy2be3619 how are you today? Did you call midwife or someone for advice? Hope your feeling better

mummy2be3619 · 21/06/2019 12:23

@TheRedSquare hello :) thankfully it’s just a UTI! X

OP posts:
SophiaLarsen · 21/06/2019 13:11

Oh good. Did you go to the mat ward?

Bettyhop · 21/06/2019 13:15

I had this after I had my baby last month. Was petrified it would be permanent. It took 3 weeks for me to have the sensation that my bladder was full and I had a few accidents in that time. Gradually the sensation has returned. Now to work on the pelvic floor! Hope yours improves soon xxx
