Was the 2nd birth quicker and easier?

I've not been on here for ages after a battle over bananas on the weaning threads...

Got DS 10 months and Baby 2 due this coming November.

Have been told Number 2 quicker, easier, less painful (!?!) than first.

Certainly the pregnancy is less of a body shock, but does everyone find this?

Be prepared for the afterpains if you bf.... ask for painkillers!!!!

allgonebellyup · 20/07/2007 16:43

yes, the rate of dilation was much slower than with my first baby and more painful!!!

SpookyMadMummy · 20/07/2007 16:44

first, admitted on thursday for induction, gave birth on saturday last thing.
Second, went in at 3 30 am, dd2 born at 8 09 am. MW insisted I was not in labour at 7 am

puppydavies · 20/07/2007 16:47

(as in 8cm dilated then 4 hours later i was 7cm)

FlameDelacour · 20/07/2007 16:49

Oh yes, afterpains def worse.

for the not progressing - they suggested that with me both times (turns out I just do lots of hurting with sod all appearing to happen, and then suddenly go for it)

mumtoone · 20/07/2007 17:20

My second labour was quicker which meant I coped much better and had enough energy for the pushing stage. I also found I recovered from the birth faster although the after pains were stronger but they weren't too bad.

handlemecarefully · 20/07/2007 17:21

Yes infinitely

LunarSea · 20/07/2007 17:27

Yes - first was 53 hours. 2nd was 30 minutes, no pain relief, an unplanned home birth!

suezee · 20/07/2007 17:30

3 hours start to finish.......it was ace

SanetJvv · 20/07/2007 17:39

LunarSea, that must have been a shock! How old is dc2, will you have a dc3? If you are going to have a dc3 I wonder how long 3rd birth will be? That would frighten me, but hopefulle everything went very well...

mummylin2495 · 20/07/2007 17:40

my first baby took 4 1/2 hours and my second was even quicker at 3 3/4 hrs but i do think the pain was worse, and of course the dreaded after pains with the second ,but i consider myself very lucky as i am only small and thought i was going to die !

mosschops30 · 20/07/2007 17:41

1st was 25 hours and horrendous, although managed to deliver eventually without help (apart from loads of drugs).

2nd was induced but only 6 hours and a much better experience, still had loads of drugs though

amidaiwish · 20/07/2007 18:20

i had more twinges/period pain for days before going into labour with DD2

but
DD2 quicker labour - contracted much faster and was an easier and less painful birth all round.

amidaiwish · 20/07/2007 18:21

oh yes the after pains - had to take nurofen for a few days after. i forgot about that.

my mum said that with her fourth the after pains were worse than the labour!!

Mrsjaffabiffa · 20/07/2007 21:50

VERY long labour with first. 2nd was fantastic, I actually enjoyed it. 2.5hrs, no complications, little pain and easy, easy.
Just had my 3rd 9 weeks ago, 2hrs total, 20mins from 5cm, NO NO don't wan't to do that again. PAIN! Or is it still too fresh in my mind.

So yes, for me 2nd definately true to your OP.

pipsi100 · 21/07/2007 06:58

1st 7 hours total transferred home birth after 2 hours of pushing - NHS rules on time allowed but had DS1 within 20 min of getting into hospital.
2nd 45 min total, had DS2 within 5 min of getting to hospial having dialled 999 as knew midwife would not arrive in time.

flightattendant · 21/07/2007 13:10

First easier because of epidural. No pain

but 8hrs.

Second was 3.5 hrs and no meds, very painful but the quickness was great!

IdrisTheDragon · 21/07/2007 13:16

Second birth was quicker, and definitely less painful. Although 4 days late (whereas DS was 11 days early).
