Why do you only get back contractions?

Is it more painful to get only back contractions?

I'm not sure there is such a thing as feeling them 'only' in your back but yes, back labour is a thing and can be extremely painful.
My DD was back to back and the back pain was the worst thing about the whole experience. I ended up with sterile water injections first to ease the pain then when they wore off I opted for an epidural which I really didn't want but the back pain was unbearable.

Buddywoo · 20/05/2019 00:55

Both my labours were felt only in my back. I have a retroverted uterus and maybe that was a reason. My daughter had her labour pains in the back as well.

sanityisamyth · 20/05/2019 01:29

I only had pains in my back. Felt like someone was wringing my kidneys out. Bloody painful!

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 20/05/2019 20:56

Back and thighs with my son, apparently his giant head was pressing on the sciatic nerve. Back and pelvis with my daughter. I have a less than optimal pelvis and babies with huge heads.

I've never known pain like dc1's labour. I wanted to die. In comparison my recovery from the emergency section which eventually delivered him was a walk in the park which required zero pain relief whatsoever.

maloofhoof · 20/05/2019 20:59

I only had back pain in both my labours. Not so much as even a twinge in my stomach.

Smolo · 20/05/2019 21:17

I also only ever felt contractions in my back. Absolutely nothing in my stomach. DD was back to back.

WinterWife · 20/05/2019 21:31

Yep another one who's baby was back to back and only felt contractions in my back and hip area. Awful pain and ended in csection.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 20/05/2019 21:34

I only got back contractions
Back to back and bloody painful

stepbystepdoula · 21/05/2019 06:59

It is usually if babies are back to back, use all tools available to you to help, focus, relax, warm water, tens, rebozo, and if you need it gas and air, pethedine or epidural. Good luck 💙

NancyJoan · 21/05/2019 07:03

Both of mine were back to back. Ugh. If I were to have another it would be a CS.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 21/05/2019 07:04

I've had 3 back labours of 4 and they are awful! Only one was back to back and my uterus is utterly standard, so no idea why though.

waterandmilk · 21/05/2019 07:07

My first labour was like this. Only on my back. The pain was not like something I would have ever imagined.
Then I was told he was facing up so I assumed it was a back to back labour.
But reading comments I see lots of people have this at each labour and worry about my next😭

AnalyseThis · 21/05/2019 07:24

Another back-only labour here. Contractions were also focused only in a tiny area in the small of my back but very intense - exH sprained his thumbs with my demand that he massage this area constantly. Lying down for a couple of minutes when the midwife wanted to examine me was excruciating but walking around or in the pool was manageable.

No idea why labour turned out this way. Midwife didn't think there was anything unusual about my body or DD's positioning. I observe that I don't get period pains either, experienced no after-pains following the birth, and that my uterus shrank back very quickly.

Tinyteatime · 21/05/2019 07:32

My experience is the same. Baby back to back and only felt them in my back. That said back labour was a breeze compared to being induced.

InDubiousBattle · 21/05/2019 08:01

I only felt contractions in my back, it was unbelievably painful. My d's was born back to back, my dd started out back to back but turned during labour so I was in loads of pain but not getting anywhere before she turned, then went straight to delivering her when she turned. My last contraction was less painful than my first.

tinyradish · 23/05/2019 01:22

Only back contractions here, however baby was in the perfect position. Contractions for 48hours before even going to hospital - terrible, wish I'd had a tens to try! Hot water bottle helped. :)

OkPedro · 23/05/2019 01:34

I had no back pain during labour which I guess is because my babies weren’t back to back Smile
I don’t know if back to back is more painful. My labours were bloody painful though!

SparrowSG · 24/05/2019 14:02

@tinyradish I had a tens and it made no difference! Still felt someone was stabbing me in the back every few minutes...

Creatureofthenight · 24/05/2019 21:04

I had back to back labour and only back pains. Was bloody agony. My birth plan quickly changed from “just gas and air” to “whatever drugs you’ve got”.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/05/2019 21:09

That said back labour was a breeze compared to being induced.

I went into labour naturally with mine (back labour) but they had to put me on the drip because dc1 wasn't properly on the cervix. With the drip turned right up, my pain levels didn't change, it started as agony and ended that way too. Odd how it's all so different isn't it.

BeardofZeus · 24/05/2019 21:10

Mine felt like DD was trying to drill her way out of my pelvic floor.. no pain outside of the pubic region!

BabyB04 · 25/05/2019 10:44

Has this put any of you off having more kids Hmm my labour was so painful it’s kind of put me off or even considering a c section x

Gingerninja01 · 25/05/2019 10:46

My labour with DD was back to back and I didn’t feel a thing in my stomach, it was all around my back.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/05/2019 10:51

Has this put any of you off having more kids

I've had 2, dc1 was back to back, pushed, failed forceps, emergency section and dc2 was meant to be an elective section, ended up being back labour and then an emergency section. Oddly enough it's the thought of a 3rd section which puts me off another baby rather than the chance that I'd labour in my back again (I tend to go into labour before 39 weeks).

Gobblebox · 25/05/2019 10:57

Back only. I walked for miles round and round the ward for hours (my mums advice who had given birth multiple timesWink). When I sat down I was fully dilated. If I hadn’t had walked I don’t know how I would have got through it
