When did you drive after a C section?

I know most guidelines say 6 weeks but when did you drive after a section?

Does insurance become void if you drive before then?

Call them and check.
My friend was told that as long as she could perform and emergency stop safely and felt well enough she could drive and was insured. That was around four weeks after.

managedmis · 08/05/2019 12:05

After 2. Had to take DS to daycare and DH was back at work. It was fine. Just took it easy.

bengalcat · 08/05/2019 12:06

Call your insurer. Many take the stance that if you are painfeee and comfortable enough to drive without distraction and perform an emergency stop then you’re safe to drive .

RaptorWhiskers · 08/05/2019 12:06

Yes your insurance will be void if you drive before the doctor has cleared you to do so. I think I was off the road for about four weeks.

redstapler · 08/05/2019 12:07

Dr doesn't need to clear you. Ask insurer. Uusally when you can do emergency stop. 10d for me.

Whether or not your insurance would be invalidated if you were to drive before 6 weeks is a question of what the policy terms say.

Erring on the side of caution, I have always been to my GP after each of my C-sections to ask if it was ok, in their view, for me to drive. I've done this at the time I felt physically well enough to drive, which in each case was well before the 6 week check. Most recently, I had a C section at the end of Jan and GP signed me off to drive at end of Feb.

blackcat86 · 08/05/2019 12:36

Exactly 6 weeks. I was advised by insurance was invalid before then and I wouldn't have risked it with baby in the car.

PencereTencere · 08/05/2019 12:40

2 weeks and 4 days. My insurer said I was covered providing the GP approved, and my Dr asked to give me a quick once over. It mostly involved me stamping my feet as hard as I could to show her I could do an emergency stop if needed.

Reader1984 · 08/05/2019 21:52

2 weeks. My insurer had no issue.

Chilledout11 · 08/05/2019 21:54

I waited until my six week check. I live in a rural area but got taxis or relatives to drive me. I think I felt ok to after 3 weeks though. I just didn't risk it.

Thatsnotmyotter · 08/05/2019 21:57

4 weeks. Could have driven before but DH was a bit nervous and was off work anyway. Insurers were fine.

Littlebird88 · 08/05/2019 22:00

6 weeks with my first as I was told.that was the law!
second and third about 2 weeks. I phoned insurer each time and checked

welshweasel · 08/05/2019 22:03

2 weeks with first and 10 days with the second. Insurance weren’t bothered.

megletthesecond · 08/05/2019 22:06

6 weeks.
It takes longer for the internal wounds to heal than the external cut. It's not worth risking recovery tbh. Health comes first. Get taxis if you have to, it's a small price to pay.

resipsa · 08/05/2019 22:10

After 3 weeks - needed to get out and about. GP said it was fine - just ask the question then you're covered (depending what on your insurance wording).

stucknoue · 08/05/2019 22:20

Check your insurance, my says 6 weeks or requires medical clearance.

TokyoSushi · 08/05/2019 22:22

10 days, my insurer couldn't have been less interested!

Pomfluff · 09/05/2019 15:01

4 weeks. Didn‘t get any guidelines from insurer or doctor, just waited until I felt up for it. Driving alone wasn‘t a problem at all thought stitches still stung a bit once I reached the destination and had to walk. Though driving and carrying baby or grocery bags was closer to 6-8 weeks!

Faster · 09/05/2019 15:04

7 weeks but that was because I had a wound infection that wouldn’t heal for buggery

Pipandmum · 09/05/2019 15:08

I waited the six weeks. Walked everywhere. By the way stamping your feet is not the same as emergency stop which engages your abs a lot more. Silly GP!

Hermie12 · 09/05/2019 15:14

6 weeks. I tried a short journey after 4 but I really felt sore so left it a bit longer

bengalcat · 09/05/2019 18:14

If you’re comfortable and feel safe to drive and there’s no issue with your insurance policy - women who are sitting on stitches don’t seem to ask when they’re safe to drive

Mayalready · 09/05/2019 18:17

Ten days after checking insurers had no objection.

incogneto · 09/05/2019 18:17

Thanks all, think I'll ring the insurance to make sure I'm covered! Going mad sat in the house for most of the time

Shelbybear · 10/05/2019 22:33

My insurance didn't sound that bothered they were just like if doctor said it's ok then it's fine.

I spoke to doctor on the phone after 3 weeks, he was like hmmm yes if everything is healing ok then not a problem but maybe wait another few days more towards the 4 weeks.

I started driving a couple of days later but it was uncomfortable, just to take daughter to doctors or pop to shops, was always short journeys. Worst part was carrying the car seat or trying to get the pram in and out of car, ouch!
