Unusual bleeding 1 week postpartum?

My beautiful baby girl is one week old Smile The lochia bleeding (which was really mucousy) quickly settled to brownish and then faded to yellow over the next few days and there has been very little for two days. However yesterday and this morning, I’ve had two gushes of bright red blood... it’s hard to judge the amount but I’d say maybe 2-3 tablespoons each time.

I’ve also not been feeling well with a persistent headache and “general crapness” as I described it to DH. But I think that’s probably normal with a newborn!

Should I be worried? I’m blood phobic so tend to get overly concerned and freaked out where there’s blood involved. The midwife is coming today so I’ll mention it to her anyway.

Have you got a temperature? Does the lochia have an offensive smell?

The bleeding can increase if you’re doing too much. I was still bleeding rather heavily for 2/3 weeks after birth.

If you have any signs of infection (high temp, smelly lochia, feeling unwell) get in touch with your maternity unit as you’re still under their care for a couple of weeks post-birth.

With the headache and general crapness I’d definitely mention it to midwife.

Definitely mention it to Midwife but in my experience the bleeding comes and goes, and switches between red and brown. This can go on for around 6 weeks.

Sux2buthen · 05/05/2019 07:16

It's most likely normal and could go on for 6 weeks. Mine has only just stopped at 8?weeks. I had a lot of stopping and starting too. If you suddenly get more it can be a sign of being a bit too active, something to bear in mind.
That being said, I would always talk to the midwife, health visitor or gp about anything concerning me.
Congratulations Thanks

It’s worth a mention to the midwife. How often are you needing to ch she your pad? The general rule is that if your filling a pad an hour you should get checked out.
Like others o found thebleeding came and went over 6 weeks

Were you up and about a bit more yesterday? I found that the more I did in those first couple of weeks the more I bled.

NotANewUser2 · 05/05/2019 07:33

No I didn’t really do much yesterday, it was definitely less than I have done on other days. Good to know that it can get heavier and lighter for a few weeks, that makes me feel a bit better.

I don’t think I have a temperature ... I feel chilly and have sweaty feet though! Gross haha.

Will mention it to midwife anyway and see what she says. Thanks all!

Update with more info ... bleeding is getting heavier, soaking a pad in less than an hour Sad no foul smell, and I’m starting to feel more unwell but I think that’s anxiety! Midwife will be here shortly.

Oh good, mention that your lochia went yellow too. Just in case. Hope you're OK.

HollyDollyLolly · 05/05/2019 11:23

If CMW no ETA then please ring the triage/assessment unit at the hospital x get DH to pack a few bits and bobs together as likely CMW may advise you to go there anyway x

Jemima232 · 05/05/2019 11:29

You can always ring your CMW and ask her for advice, 24/7.

You don't have to wait for her visit if you're worried about anything.

If she thinks you have a potential problem, such as post-natal infection, she'll come straight out to you, and not wait until the scheduled visit.

One week post-partum is the classic time for a secondary PPH.

Midwife isn’t overly concerned, she said that it’s normal for bleeding to be stop/start and the freshness of the blood to vary at this stage. All other signs are normal, uterus is contracted down and heart rate, blood pressure and temperature are fine. So she doesn’t think there’s anything to worry about Smile
