A Thai takeaway did the trick with my second.

Tutter · 13/07/2007 19:44

got to be hot to smoke em out

Apparently - a midwife told me this - it does work but only if the baby is ready to be born. Something to do with the rumblings caused by spicy food triggering off contractions. I probably had the soup with coconut milk and those glassy noodles with prawns because that's what I always have. And I often add extra chillis. So yes hot.

mrsmalumbas · 13/07/2007 19:48

If you don't like hot curry try cumin tea - steep a couple of teaspoons of cumin seeds, a clove or two, a bit of grated ginger, and a small cube of potato (dunno why but the potato is crucial) in hot water for 5 mins and drink the liquid. You can also add a bit of lemon if you like. Something in the cumin, I think, which is also a common ingredient in curry. Basically the theory is that a hot curry stimulates the bowels which also stimulates the cervix. Same reason why some people try castor oil but this can be risky as you get the runs big style and there is a theory that this can lead to fetal distress (over stimulation, presumably). Of course all this will only work if you are on the verge of going into labour anyway. In which case why sweat it? But if you are massively overdue and facing an induction, could be worth a try.

Tutter · 13/07/2007 19:51

nah, not overdue (38+6), but pretty massive

good excuse for a curry i guess

might as well make it a hot one... any recommendations? i'm normally a butter chicken kind of girl...

But why oh WHY?

Do women who eat spicy food and chilli always give birth on their due date!? Just wondering as I have indian houseguests at the moment (and all my shelves are stucked up high with chutneys, pickled jalapenos, sweet chilli sauce, pickled chillies, and my fridge is bulging with fresh chilli etc, and I told them this and they were shocked as they never heard that hot food brings on labour. So, is it only if you are not USED to hot food it has this effect?

mrsmalumbas · 13/07/2007 19:52

Chicken jalfrezi yum yum

Tutter · 13/07/2007 19:55

I was 9 days overdue with my little one - I had a lamb madras the night before I was due to be induced - and I went into a natural labour 6 hours later!!

lulumama · 13/07/2007 20:45

tutter.. i think how it works is that the chillis and spice stimulate your digestive system, which due to the proximity of the gut t o the uterus, can trigger contractions

note of warning : a MW friend told me the story of a lady who had indulged in a lot of curry to help bring on labour, came in in labour, and ruined the doctors shoes when she was pushing ...apparently he silently removed the shoes, and put them in the clinical waste bin, and didn;t come back to the room

theabear · 13/07/2007 20:52

I tried everything else - pineapple, rasberry leaf tea, even sex!! Nothing worked, the curry was a last desperate attempt!! Worth a try if you can face it!!

thomcat · 13/07/2007 20:55

I normally have a korma. Was 10 days late with DD1 and desperate. So I had a vindaloo. Nothing. Rampant sex, nipple tweaking, hot baths with clary sage, long walks, the most fresh pinapple, oh just everything. My induction was booked and I wasn't going to let that happen. Soooo I took castor oil, and B I N G O!!!!!!

whompingwillowinthedewmeadow · 13/07/2007 21:06

warning noted lulu!! LOL

Tutter - Im EXACTLY the same stage as you and I want he/she OUT OUT OUT!!

Tutter · 13/07/2007 21:06

well, i very much enjoyed my jalfrezi, so really not upset if it has no effects labour-wise

would be embarrassed if it ended up on a doctor's shoe, so maybe best if it doesn't have an effect anyway lulu
