My first out of water, 2nd in water!!! A billion percent preferred water birth and he was a much bigger baby!!! ... I had no burning during crowning stage and the water was so soothing after the final push Smile

April45 · 10/04/2019 22:05

Loved my water birth, felt more private too.

whiteroseredrose · 10/04/2019 22:06

I tried a water birth for my first but I found the water too warm so I got out! But m not really a bath person so I should have known

Sexnotgender · 10/04/2019 22:08

I really wanted one, didn’t end up having time unfortunately!

If I have another I’ll definitely try for a water birth again.

Farmerswifey12 · 10/04/2019 22:11

I found it a bit uncomfy to be honest, I couldn't get into a position that I was happy with. I had only intended on using it for labour but progressed quickly and kind of got stuck in there!

Elliesw · 10/04/2019 22:13

I’d heard mixed things beforehand (some friends said it was amazing, others hated it) but, as with all things labour and birth, the only real answer is to try it and if it feels good, stick with it - if not, change the plan! When it came to it I found the warm water really eased the pain of contractions, but it also threw me off a bit and made me want to start pushing before my body was ready. So I ended up getting out after a few hours and did the pushing on dry land! I’d still 100% recommend trying the pool and wouldnt hesitate to use one next time round. But as I’ve said, this is just one where you’ve to to suck it and see - if it’s not working for you in the moment, abandon it! Good luck x

Water birth for first born at home- found it fabulous & great pain relief.

Used it again for second born but hated it! Too hot Wink

annlee3817 · 10/04/2019 23:15

Nice to float around in-between contractions, but during the pushing phase I just felt too hot and bother and had to get out, preferred hugging a giant bean bag on a mat on the floor with a fan on me :D

GoFiguire · 10/04/2019 23:23

When are you due? I think you need to book it in.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 11/04/2019 08:18

Both mine were water births. Wouldn't do it any other. So much freedom to move and not trying to shift with a big bump and it's also pain relief.

Loved them.

ApplestheHare · 11/04/2019 19:48

I really hoped for one but as soon as I got in, the water made me feel violently sick and I had to get straight out.

I felt so guilty for wasting all that water Blush

ShowOfHands · 11/04/2019 19:51

I tried it and had an emcs eventually. It was okay but I got way too hot and it made me sick.

Roxyxoxo · 11/04/2019 19:51

The actual birth didn’t go to plan and I couldn’t give birth in the water, but I went from 5cm to fully dialated in the pool and absolutely loved it; I would fully recommend it (but remain open minded as there are situations in which it’s safer to be out of the water). It honestly felt so relaxing and I think it paid a huge part in me staying relaxed and dealing with the ‘pain’ with just gas and air. Everyone is different though and some of my friends weren’t fans! But if you want one definitely try for access to one and you can obviously always get out if you don’t like it.

SequinsDress · 11/04/2019 21:54

I had my second in the water - I bloody loved it. It was quite hot, but the midwife pointed a fan in my direction which helped with that. It felt so wonderfully calm and serene in the water, I felt supported / weightless and it definitely relaxed me. Due to a relatively quick labour, I was only in there for 10-15 minutes before baby was born, basically just for pushing.

I wasn't actually sure that I wanted to go in, as it meant removing my beloved TENS machine, but I am so glad I decided to try it.

PhoebeBear · 11/04/2019 23:06

Following this post.
I'm 23 weeks and everyone I've talked to that's had a water birth totally recommend it! My friend started off in the pool and said she felt quite hot so tried to get out but the pressure was so strong she stayed back in the water where it really helped with the pressure feeling. 20 minutes later and a few pushes and her daughter was born. It's her first and she said it definitely wasn't as bad as she imagined!
I just hope I don't ask for epidural because I'd love to do it in the water

confusednorthner · 11/04/2019 23:09

Definitely recommend one, ds was born in water and far better and calmer than dd. Can't help wondering if there's a connection now he's 11 and that I sit poolside 4 nights a week now while he swims....

KaterinaPetrova · 11/04/2019 23:11

3rd baby was a waterbirth and I could have kicked myself for not doing it with the previous 2 babies.

It's a-fucking-mazing! Halved the pain for me.

DyslexicNotThick · 11/04/2019 23:19

Baby 1 was dry birth in hospital.
Baby 2&3 were in a pool at home.

I would without hesitation aim for water birth if I was to get pregnant again. If I had to choose between water or being at home, I would choose water.

It eased the pain and made me feel weightless. (I'm so far from weightless!!) I only needed gas and air for baby 2 and had no pain relief apart from the pool for baby 3.

Baby 1, I had stitches, nothing for baby 2&3.
Many pp's have said about the warmth of the water and I was surprised by how warm it needed to be, but it was fine when I was in it.
I "caught" my babies as they came out and sat in the pool for a little while cuddling them before getting out to deliver the placenta. Those moments were so precious, the relief of baby being out, alive and well, and skin to skin contact in water was so comforting. No one fussing, just sitting relaxed and in awe of mother nature and what my body did, cuddling my lovely little bundle.

If it's something that interests you, explore it more. If hospital delivery then see if you can look at birthing suite, get info on criteria etc. If at home then check out the inflatable pools or hiring a solid pool.

Your thread shows different people prefer different things, add in the unknowns of individual pregnancies and delivery and all you can do is try to figure out what you would like to try in labour, and be flexible enough to go with the flow and whatever you and baby need in the moment.

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy and delivery.

MyMumDimensionJumps · 12/04/2019 19:20

Had one recently. I found it great and much more relaxing than being on a bed, you can get in better positions as you are more weightless in water and you feel less exposed. It still hurts though, but managed with just breathing techniques and pool up to the last 45mins, before I had gas and air.

I wasn't keen on having the pushing stage in the pool, but by that point I just wanted to rest in between the contractions, getting out on to the bed seemed like a lot of hassle!

The water is pretty rough after though....

PurpleFlower1983 · 13/04/2019 23:07

Mine was amazing!

maxinespalour · 13/04/2019 23:31

I had one for 2nd dc, awful experience I'm sorry to say. I was desperate to get out after 20 minutes but couldn't move as I was in so much pain and although I'm petite and dh is over 6ft, there was nothing he could do either. I basically would have needed a hoist as the pool was huge but there wasn't one! Dh desperately tried to help me get out but couldn't Sad
I hated how little the midwife could see what was going on as unbeknown to us all, ds had the cord wrapped around his neck and wasn't breathing when he was born, something they would have know if I was out of the water. I also tore very, very badly (an episiotomy was desperately needed but obviously this couldn't be seen in the water!) and I was immediately rushed to theatre after the birth.
I like to think my experience is rare but I feel it needs to be shared too.
