Induction anxiety

Hi all,

I'm booked in to be induced on my due date due to severe SPD, and as much as I'm pleased (I can't wait to meet my baby! - and stop being in this pain!), I'm starting to get a bit anxious about induction.

I just wondered if anyone would be kind enough to share their stories in terms of what I should expect? I know that it could take days from when I'm admitted, but I guess I'm hoping for a worse case scenario I.e. she will be here by x date.

Also, regarding pain relief or any other advice you might have really.

I've actually been lucky enough to never need an overnight stay in hospital before so I'm quite anxious about that as well if I'm honest - I know that might sound silly.

Thanks very much!

Hi! I was induced with my first as waters went and then nothing happened. I was given the pessary late on the Friday night and then put on hormone drip at about 7.30 the next morning as I hadn't felt any progress.

Contractions started about 10.30, got gas at 11.45 ish. Felt like I was unconsciously pushing around 12.45 and he was out by 1.15

I had a very mild 3rd degree tear but no issues with healing and would happily be induced again. I know everyone wants to tell you a horror story about induction but every birth is different! Good luck!

Both my dcs were too comfortable and had to be induced. With dd I was given the pessary and nothing happened all day, then another one in the evening. Contractions started about 8pm and she was born at 0454! I had some morphine and gas and air but it was all straightforward except for a 2nd degree tear. Ds was slightly faster. Again came in early for an induction, nothing happened until I was given a second pessary (a half, I was told) about 6pm. He was born by 824pm! I had awful varicose veins in the vulval area with ds, so the relief when he was born was immense! I had another 2nd degree tear, but he was nearly 10lbs!
Don't worry op, the chances are that your induction will be straightforward. Wishing you all the best! Thanks

If you've got the money, you could try things like acupuncture and reflexology to start labour naturally beforehand. Might help with the pain as well and won't do any harm.

Be prepared for a longer stay in hospital than you think . I was induced: pessary then 3 sets of gel then pessary again. I was in hospital for 6 days... the second pessary worked and it was removed before the 24 hours were up. I needed gas and air when it was being removed because I found it very painful. Had a hormone drip and as much pain relief as I was offered! I think my actual labour was about 16 hours. However... ended up with a c section so all that was for nothing!

My advice is, you don't know how long it will take. Some people find the induction process too quick. But, if you are in hospital for ages, then take everything you can think of to make yourself comfortable (must haves: eye mask and ear plugs!).

Good luck!

I was induced as my waters went and then I had no contractions for 24hrs. I only needed a pessary which was at 1pm, then contractions started at 4.30pm and I gave birth at 7.53pm. They don't always last days.

I had a pressary@ midnight, my son was born at 9:36am. I had no problem at. l will be induced again this wed with my second pregnancy. Fingers crossed it will be straightforward again.

I was induced at 38 weeks due to PROM. I was expecting induction to take days. If DD hadn’t got stuck (spent 3 hours pushing) could have been done and dusted in 3/4 hours!

My advice would be to ask for pain relief if you want it.
