Transverse baby

Im currently 33w and due to have my 3rd baby by csection at approx 39weeks. I was induced with my 1st at 36w (due to IUGR) and ended up with an EMCS. My waters broke with my 2nd at 37 weeks (breech) so my ELCS was earlier than scheduled.

Baby number 3 is currently transverse (and has been for at least the last 8w). I'm due another scan in 2 weeks but wondering if anybody has had recent experience of a transverse baby and know what the usual plan of action is? I've read about the dangers of going into labour while baby is transverse I was wondering if they usually go to 39weeks for a section as planned?

It depends on the hospital. Some would want you admitted from 37 weeks until your section, others would just tell you to go in if you started having contractions/waters break. The likelihood is though your baby will move to being head or bottom down before that point though. Fingers crossed!

Where is the placenta? That is probably the most important thing influencing management.
You have to consider history and previous labours, risk of cord prolapse etc.
Back in my day (about 100 years ago) a planned Csection at 38 weeks would be top of the list, with close monitoring before that.
33 weeks is still early and the baby might turn.
I had a breech at 33 weeks and the section at 38 weeks was written in my notes, but he turned head down by 36 weeks.

My ds was found to be unstable transverse at 37 weeks. I had to stay in the antenatal ward until I had an emcs at 38+5. Ideally they wanted to wait to 39 weeks for a planned cs.
Fingers crossed baby turns in the next few weeks, but if I were you I’d prepare for a long ish stay in antenatal.

Firstly, 33 weeks is still pretty early so theres plenty of time for baby to turn.
DS2 was transverse and I was admitted at 35 weeks following a routine growth scan.
I had to stay in hospital until my planned section at 38 weeks.
I was told that this was in case I went into labour/my waters broke. There's a danger the cord can drop down and the baby's head can then compress the cord. I was given strict instructions to press the red button next to my bed or drop down onto all fours and stick my bottom in the air if this happened - thank fully it didn't!
My section was planned for 38 weeks before the transverse stuff so not sure what would have happened otherwise. I did have to have steroid injections though as they prefer you to go to 39 weeks.

Similar story to PPs. DS was unstable but mostly transverse, I was admitted to antenatal at 38 weeks, had a week on the ward, then a CS at 39+2.
It would have been the day before but because he kept moving around, there were periods where he was head down. At 39+1 he was head down, so they said if he stayed like that for 24 hours, they would take me to theatre and break my waters. But obviously, he just kept on wriggling.

and to answer your question, I was told that they would rather wait until 39 weeks because its better for the baby. obviously, as long as your waters don't go, a transverse baby is perfectly safe, so its better to keep them in. they just want you on the ward because if the waters do go, and the cord gets compressed, its clearly life-threatening for the baby. I was told in that situation, they want the baby out within 7 minutes!!!

in my case, I was happy to go along with this because DD had been overdue and according to my own dates, rather than the scan dates, DS wasn't actually due for another week after his due date anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to plan ahead as I would need to find childcare for my older 2 if they want to take me in early. I went into labour at 37w with my 2nd so I'm feeling a bit nervous! I'm fairly certain baby is still transverse as i only ever have kicks on the right side in the same place and I've been having growth scans so I know he has been like this for at least 8w, don't know if he's likely to move at this point🤷🏻‍♀️. I've been having some sharp pains on my right side that make me catch my breath, I'm assuming that's just because he's all squished or trying to change position. Last baby and I was planning on a nice stress-free elcs with no drama Grin
