Elec c section, do you stay on the ward afterwards or do you get a room?

With my emergency c section i had a room afterwards, but in hignsight i wonder if that was because my son was jaundice and needed to be under the UV light?

Thanks in advance!!

I had one both times. I think you usually get one as long as they have enough rooms

If they are short then emergency cases might take precedence

I loved my room, didn't want to go home!

Scrumptiousbears · 26/03/2019 22:06

Emergency and elective were both on the ward for me.

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/03/2019 22:08

I got some time in a curtained off area near theatre then wheeled up to the ward. I didn't have a private room for emergency either, and dd was under the blue light for jaundice! I guess it's mainly down to your hospital and also what rooms they have free at the right time.

ChipsAreLife · 26/03/2019 22:11

I had private room for emergency but I wasn't very well and needed quiet.

Second time elective on the ward. Wasn't too bad but it's very hard to sleep as surrounded by babies and nurses etc

Ellapaella · 26/03/2019 22:15

Two elective sections and was just on the ward both times.

dreamyflower · 26/03/2019 22:16

Both emergency and elective were on wards for me and they were in different hospitals.

JumpingFrogs · 26/03/2019 22:19

At my hospital they kept me by the nurse's station for the first night so they could keep an eye on me. With dc1 they then moved me to a bay further down the ward the next day. With my twins they moved me to a small room after the first night. They told me they only did that because I had twins and was trying to sort out the breast-feeding.

Elmo311 · 26/03/2019 22:21

Thank you all!
Did you all get sent home within 24hrs or more? Did you get any sleep?!
I didn't get any sleep in my room anyway as constantly had midwives coming in and out waking me to check BP or ask something. Zero fucks given me or OH was sleeping! Was so exhausting as would just have dozed off after feeding the baby!
Hoping to go home ASAP! X

I had my own room from admission to discharge. The whole maternity unit was single rooms with en-suites. I realise that’s not the case everywhere but I think it’s awful that women have to be on a ward having just given birth. I felt so vulnerable and was very grateful that DH could stay

rollonoctober · 26/03/2019 22:24

I've had 4 sections, had private room for 2 and on the ward for 2 so think it's just luck of the draw depending on what's available at the time. With my first i was in for 2 nights (3 if you count the night of the section as DS born at 1am). For the other 3 I was out next day.

GroggyLegs · 26/03/2019 22:28

Both times (EMC & ELC) I was on the ward for a night - something to do with keeping an eye on me (allegedly!)

Second time, I got v little sleep due to noisy snoring men, but I told the midwife I'd be going home the next day, made sure they saw me up & about, getting a cuppa, having a shower etc. DS2 was fit & well, and they signed me off without argument within 24h.

I think it helps you get out quicker if it's a second baby. They assume you sort of know what you're doing Grin

Ellapaella · 26/03/2019 22:32

Never got much sleep either time. Lots of babies crying, my ds had slept most of the day so stayed up all night feeding pretty much constantly. Kept getting blood pressure taken at random times in the night and shoulder tip pain so too uncomfortable to sleep.
Staff were working very hard and were fantastic but I still had my bags packed and was sitting on the bed fully dressed ready to leave at 8am! Couldn't get out of there fast enough! As soon as I got home DH over with the baby and I went straight to bed for a sleep - bliss.

Cannyhandleit · 26/03/2019 22:33

I had a room after emergency but on the ward after elective! Was only there for 1 night though!

Yakadee · 27/03/2019 04:06

I was on a ward too however I got half of the room to myself as nobody came in to occupy that other part. There was only one other woman in too which was good.

Zero sleep for me though. The woman opposite had a very unhappy baby as was having difficulty feeding. I actually think I'd have slept OK had that not been the case.

I had baby at 9:36am on the Tues and left around 1/2pm the following day.

Good luck x

I had an ELCS 8 weeks ago and was taken to the ward after recovery room - the ward was divided into a section for those who had delivered vaginally and a section for all the c-sections. There were private rooms, which you had to pay for. I did this. It was nice to have a bit more space to myself, and I felt less bad when my baby cried all night than I would have if that had happened on the ward and had kept everyone up.

I was in for one night only, after a morning operation. Was home by 4 the day after.

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 27/03/2019 05:14

My first where baby was in special care, I had a single room. The second where baby was with me I was on a ward. DD had a baby in special care and she, too, was put in a single room after delivery. If a baby is in special care I’d imagine it would be horrendous to be on a ward with other people’s babies

Elmo311 · 27/03/2019 07:58

Thanks again everyone :)
Sounds a bit mixed but i will expect to be on the ward now, as long as baby is ok. Fingers crossed! X

3 sections all 3 times on ward including when my baby was in NICU. That time I was supposed to be in a baby free bay but scbu kept returning other peoples babies without checking with the midwives. Not a great time but all the private rooms were taken

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 27/03/2019 16:43

Our local hospital prefers women with c-sections to be on the ward. I got a private room but only because my consultant knew that I wouldn't be able to stay on the ward as they now let partners stay overnight.

muminmanchester · 27/03/2019 16:56

I got home yesterday after an ELCS. I was put on the ward, but a ward of all c section recoveries and we had a dedicated midwife to help us lift our babies etc.

It was fine. I had a private room for DS1 after a nightmare delivery and actually think the ward was preferable as you get a lot more support from the nurses and midwives.

Sleep is an issue though - someone's baby is usually awake or bell ringing. Expect to doze rather than sleep at night and then get as much sleeping done during the day as you can, ask your partner to take baby to the day room or something so you can rest.

I was home within 24 hours, so it's perfectly manageable for a short period of time. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your replies! Very helpful!

One more (minor) thing...did anyone wear make up during their c section?
My nose is always a little red at the sides...I'd love a bit of concealer on it cos I'm insecure like that!

I was in the ward in a corner, no one helped with baby or brought food to me or more importantly noticed baby wasn’t feeding properly and had jaundice. We were out within 24 hours and then back in two days later.

SazCat · 28/03/2019 15:48

I wore make up yeah! Not loads but a bit. Had comments of how well I look in the first photos Grin

Elmo311 · 28/03/2019 15:52

@fedupandlookingforchange that sounds like my experience last time (although i had a room) xit was shit!!
