What did you write in your c section birth plan? :D

Hello,

I am having an elective c section in 2.5 weeks and i am writing out my birth plan for it.

Interested to see what other people wrote for theirs?

I have the usual things... skin to skin, take photos if allowed, lower screen when baby being born, my preference for regional block over GA, urinary cathether to be inserted after epi/spinal placed...(unless having it inserted is not painful?)

What other things should i include?!
My OH is prone to black outs so I've warned them of that!

Thanks in advance!

Vitamin K is to help blood clotting
Without it, the baby is at risk of a bleed including a brain haemorrhage

They do give it more or less routinely but you need to consent to it first

It’s over in seconds

Mine was a bit rubbish. I put General Anesthetic, baby to kept away from me until I was fully conscious.

But on a more helpful note, my Consultant wrote the following on my behalf:

Husband to be present for the spinal
Drape to be positioned as far away from my head as possible to make plenty of space for baby.
Drape to be dropped for birth
Delayed cord clamping
Skin to skin asap
All checks, weighing, vit K to be done in Recovery
Discharge the following day assuming no issues

I ended up with their plan and it was amazing. I really recommend watching them come out, it's sublime and beautiful and miraculous. Seeing them moving under your skin and then emerging bit by bit.

Dd was born, untangled from her massive cord and laid on my legs for a bit. They cut the cord, passed her to a midwife who gave her a quick rub with a towel and stuck a hat on her. In the meantime the anesthetist pretty much yanked my gown off me (recommend not tying it that tightly or leaving an arm out) and dd was stuck on my naked chest in just the hat. We had a blanket popped over both of us and that was warm off. Apart from offering me the placenta in an icecream tub and showing us the different parts, the staff left me and dh alone. We spent the rest of it in a bubble staring at dd and telling everyone how amazing she was.

In recovery she was weighed and measured (we were given the tape measure with her head size on one side and her length on the other) and given vitamin K whilst I fed her.

We were discharged the following day and whilst it was also an emergency (should have been an elective but I went into labour) it was totally different from my first emcs and a fantastic experience.

Nobody who didn't need to be there.

However, They invited students in so they could observe (twins) and asked me if I minded when I was drugged up flat on my back and they were already in there.

Hollowvictory · 20/03/2019 20:24

12 people at mine! (premature twins) I barely noticed

Marlena1 · 20/03/2019 20:25

I remember asking about delayed cord clamping (but they just had standard time where I was). Meant to be good for baby.

Redcrayons · 20/03/2019 20:30

Hillowvictory - tbh if they hadn't asked me I wouldn't have noticed, there was a lot going on. Makes me think that the Read the birth plan and just decided to invite them in anyway.

I wrote that I wanted delayed cord clamping, skin to skin straight away and the screen lowered so I could see the birth. I also wanted dh to take loads of photos. Dh took about 200 photos but I didn't get skin to skin, hold or even see my babies. Youngest was being resuscitated so that was unavoidable but with my older dc they gave him to dh and dh had to sit behind me so I couldn't see them.

Delayed cord clamping and skin to skin. Whilst in the theatre I asked for the anithestist to talk me through the procedure (I hated the thought of just lying there not knowing what was happening)

My hospital will cut the cord “long” so that you or more likely birthing partner can cut the cord closer to baby so they don’t miss on that experience

FirstTimeBumps · 22/03/2019 22:39

Had a plan A for home water birth, B for hospital birth and C for Csection. Ended up with C. I cluded vitamin K by injection, delayed cord clamping (got but only 1 minute as placenta was delivering spontaneously?) requested partner cut cord (didn't get), requested partner to inform of baby's gender (did get). Didn't plan for music etc as was emergency csection but they had absolute 80s on I think so was quite happy with that. Got skin to skin but 50 minute after born as I was high as a kite on gas and air and scared I'd drop him, sent partner to do skin to skin instead. In hindsight I would request curtain lowered. Catheter was put in after spinal anyway x
