Diabetic & C Section

Hi, I'm diabetic and due to have a c section in a few weeks. Does anyone have any experience in order of priority on day as I know you have to be nil by mouth and being diabetic that's not going to work for long.
Also everywhere I read it says after c section you are stuck in bed for 12 hours, then a lady at work said that wasn't true they have u up and about in 2. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think they look at who is booked and run a triage type system. However I was due to go first on the list for mental health issues and I know that there was at least one diabetic lady on the list for the same day (she ended up having the first elective of the day after dd was born at 6am).

Had 2 emergencies, never been stuck in bed for 12 hours. First one I was up and dressed around the 5 hour mark (epidural) and the second I was up as soon as I got a bed on recovery which took about 6 hours.

Hi op. Couldn't comment on your first question however I had a section 6 weeks ago and they wanted me up and about pretty quick. The made me (not that I didn't want to) take a shower that evening too.

Good luck, hope it all goes well x

Yes they will try and get diabetics first on the list. If you are on insulin will have you on a sliding scale so that you can go a while without food.
And it varies from trust to trust but around the 6 hour mark is when they tend to get you out fo bed post op

I'm type 1 and had emergency section so the my doesn't really apply but its not as scary as you expect it to be. There are lost f wires and you will be on an insullin driver the whole time which I actually appreciated as it meant I didn't have to worry about it for once!

They try to get you to move as soon as you can. I was in bed for about 6 hours then they got me up for a wash.

I was in for 5 days but my delivery was a bit more complicated (pre eclampsia) but it wasn't that bad really!

I was second on the list on the day of my elective, 4 weeks ago. Went into theatre at about 11am and was in recovery 40 minutes later. Feeling back in legs by about 5pm, was walking around at midnight and discharged at noon the next day. Was a very straightforward and quite lovely experience.

Type 1 diabetic, nil by mouth from previous evening unless needed sugar (was going to have ribena if needed!) was first on the list in the morning, for an elective c section rather than a possibly long drawn out induction at 37+1. Had entirely stable blood sugars overnight, am on a CGM, so consultant agreed for no sliding scale. Husband monitored my CGM through c section, blood sugars did crazy stuff afterwards - be ready to drop to pre pregnancy insulin levels immediately. Then left hospital 24 hours later.

You will be first on the list. Most likely on a sliding scale as well so don't worry about glucose level. I went to HDU after the recovery room just so they good keep an eye on me and baby as you will need regular glucose testing which is easier when the nursing levels are higher.

During the section I actually felt shaken and sweaty so I told them and they did a prick on me to double check so don't be afraid to say if you feel not right. My levels were fine I was just super nervous.

Good luck.
