Anybody had two sections?

upsideyerelephant · 12/03/2019 13:23

I had an emergency section after a failed induction with my first. I had nightmares and flash backs for months after that induction. It was the most frightening and humiliating experience of my life.

We're TTC our second and after the tunnel of hell that was my first birth, I'm going to have planned section with the second.

Are there any issues associated with doing that? First section was a walk in the park for me as I had GA. Will they do a planned section under GA?

I had an elective c section with DS2 after an emergency one with DS1. Depending on where you are you might have to be very insistent, a lot of doctors and hospitals are against elective csections.
It won't be under GA, as that carries extra risks and extra recovery time. But being awake is nicer! You'll get to see and hold your baby straight away. Recovery was easier this time round. My elective csection birth was a really lovely experience after a pretty terrible experience first time round.

Tunnockswafer · 12/03/2019 13:33

I’ve had two, both elective, both spinal anaesthetic. No problems.

Worlds0kayestmum · 12/03/2019 13:35

I had an EMCS with DD after a failed induction.
When pregnant with DS, I was offered an elective section at 39 weeks however, he was born by EMCS at 31 weeks after reduced movements. Traumatic time but the actual section was completely fine and my recovery was a breeze luckily

upsideyerelephant · 12/03/2019 13:35

They really won't do it under GA? I really don't think I'd want to be awake.

Would just like to go to sleep and wake up a bit layer to be presented with a baby, thank you!

I could have written your first paragraph word for word Flowers and tunnel of hell just about sums up my induction experience.

I had an elective 2nd time. They pushed VBAC, but my mind was made. The 2nd time round was a very calm experience. I'm not sure about GA as I was awake for both. My mum had GA for both (one EMCS one ELCS) but this was almost 30 years ago. Good luck Smile

Falafel19 · 12/03/2019 13:38

Had 2 cs with spinal block. First was emcs so a bit of a shock to the system, second was not emergency but for medical reasons, was much better prepared for it thanks to experience obviously and hypnobirthing.

sola82 · 12/03/2019 13:38

They won't do it under GA. What are your concerns about being awake?

SparkyBlue · 12/03/2019 13:40

I had two and I am about to have my third. None were under GA.

Laniakea · 12/03/2019 13:40

I’ve had four - one with an epidural (emergency) & three with spinals (electives). It is vanishingly unlikely they would do an elective c-section under GA without a medical need.

Warmhandscoldheart · 12/03/2019 13:41

I've had two. DC1 was an emergency after failed forceps delivery. DC2 was elective, (wasn't going thru the worry again). GA during both as they sterilised me straight after DC2 was born (my choice)

upsideyerelephant · 12/03/2019 13:42

I don't want to witness my body being cut open like that. I'd just panic.

OP posts:
Tunnockswafer · 12/03/2019 13:44

You can’t see it. I had no awareness of any cut being made. You would wake up groggy and miss seeing your lo’s first moments. Maybe you could see a c section on YouTube to see what they look like? There is a screen up between you and the action.

Littlebelina · 12/03/2019 13:45

Why was your first GA? Did they not have time to do a spinal or were there issues with a spinal? If it's the latter you might get a GA again but it is more likely to be a spinal.

Spinal isn't too bad and has the advantages of being able to hold your baby straight away and quicker recovery. I have had 1 emcs and 2 planned. They may well try to convince you to go vbac but you can request a section so don't be fobbed off if that is what you want (make sure you are clear in your reasons)

MoBiroBo · 12/03/2019 13:46

I had EMCS with Ds1 (failure to progress and baby in distress) rushed to theatre, all very stressful.

We then asked for and were granted ELCS for Ds2. It was agreed just after my 20 week scan, 13 years ago. I showed that I knew all the risks associated with a c section.

The whole thing was very calm, I walked down to theatre. Dh was with me, they sat me on a bed, Dh sat on a stool nearby and put in a spinal block - sprayed my back with anti-bac stuff, local anaesthetic then spinal which I did not feel at all.

Laid me down and they left as did Dh to get into scrubs. Midwife came in, they give you a wipe with anti-back stuff for between your legs and then insert the catheter.

You just lie there for about 10 minutes waiting for your turn in theatre. It was a walk in the park. I wouldn't want to be asleep, I saw Dh cry both times at being a Dad, he cut down the cord, saw him holding our son etc

GA carries a lot more risk.

BikeRunSki · 12/03/2019 13:50

I had an emcs with my first child. No one - including the baby - was too traumatised, but he was an undiagnosed footling breech and he wasn’t coming out any other way.

I pushed for VBAC the second time, and ended up with a uterine rupture, hammorage and crash section under GA. I’d highly recommend a planned section !

Ellapaella · 12/03/2019 13:51

I've had two sections, absolutely no problems at all.

Ellapaella · 12/03/2019 13:54

You won't see yourself being cut open, you are protected by a screen.
You'll be fine with the usual spinal. I found my elective sections far calmer, easier and a much better experience than the first allegedly 'normal' delivery which was pretty traumatic.

Dizzywizz · 12/03/2019 13:55

My first was emcs for failure to progress and ds1 being in distress. That was under spinal. 2nd was planned as ds2 growing too big (I’m very short) and as he didn’t come by due date, they did cs under spinal. 2nd was a lot easier to recover from (even though I had a toddler to deal with as well!)

megletthesecond · 12/03/2019 13:56

Emergency and planned under local here.

I expect they will want you to be comfortable and can help minimise your concerns during the operation though Flowers. The theatre teams were lovely for both my sections. Professional and reassuring.
You won't see yourself cut open, they have a screen across your chest.

ChipsAreLife · 12/03/2019 13:59

I had similar. Second was such a difference and lovely experience! I didn't have to push at all for an elective second time round.

Re GA you may need to push that as they don't like doing them as it slows recovery. You can't see a thing, just the ceiling and your partners face.

Good luck

IsAStormApporaching · 12/03/2019 14:00

My first dc was an emergency section. It was stressful, chaotic and dc was poorly. It was a horrible experience. (Apart from meeting my dc when she was well enough of course )
My second section was planned. I was introduced to everyone before we began. It was a lovely experience and there was a relaxed atmosphere.
The two experices really where like night and day. Of course both got our dc here safely but a planned section makes the experience a lot less traumatic.

SadVillageGirl · 12/03/2019 14:02

Both mine were GA. first because it was an emergency, second because I elected a GA.

SurgeHopper · 12/03/2019 14:03

Had 2, first was EMCS, second was elective.

No probs at all with both, dream births, tbh.

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/03/2019 14:03

I don't want to witness my body being cut open like that. I'd just panic

You won’t know anything about it because you can’t feel or see what’s going on.

crosser62 · 12/03/2019 14:04

No they won’t give you a GA.

Emergency cs and planned were like night and day for me.
I had a ga for my first, have very little memory of that, only the events leading up to it.
Planned was a lovely, calm, happy and exciting experience that I would highly recommend.
Recovery was very fast, home within 24hours, back to normal within a week or so.
