Gas and air- how soon?

Hi, when I had my DD the midwife wouldn’t let me have any gas and air before the pushing stage.

Is that normal or could I have been allowed it sooner? I had pethidine instead which really spaced me out so I’m keen to avoid it really the next time.

I had local and gas and air for stitches and like the above poster still felt the stitching in some places.

My husband was horrified they didn’t add more local to numb it properly.

I had gas while they gave me the local anaesthetic needles for the stitches (there was a lot of tearing), and for when they were pressing on one of the tears to try to stop the bleeding. I couldn't imagine not having local while they did the stitching!

As soon as labour is established, so from 4cm onwards.

I was 10cm duilated both times I went hospital. Gave me gas and air but didn't really want it and can't push at same time as breathing it in and still hurt like hell

I had gas & air while the midwife broke my waters & did a sweep, didn't do much, I nearly kicked her in the face & screamed the place down. I couldn't co ordinate the gas & air with the contractions, felt like I was either going to fall off the bed or be sick ( I'm emetophobic) Asked for an epidural straight away as they put the syntocin drip in, I'd asked for pethidine but they wouldn't let me have it as my blood pressure was sky high.
