5cm rule

I have heard people talk about if you get past 5cm then you will be able to progress to 10cm eventually but if you don't reach 5cm then you can get stuck at (for example) 3cm and subsequently have to have section due to failure to progress (hate that terminology).

Does anyone know if there is any truth to this 5cm rule?

Never heard of it, but I got to 10cm and still needed intervention with my first.

NEver heard of it and my first birth broke that rule.

My SIL was deemed a “failure to progress” as she dilated well up to 9cm and then sat at 9cm for several hours. Tried all sorts but nope, nothing. She ended up with a section but did deliver her second and third naturally. Not sure there’s a huge amount of truth in it if I’m perfectly honest.

I'm a midwife and can confirm there is absolutely no truth to that.

I got to 7cm then had a csection, I was told DS never would have managed to be pushed out.

Got to 6cm with my first before I ended up with EMCS for failure to progress. ( turned out she was wrapped up in the unbilical cord and it would never have been a good outcome if they had left it.). Got to 10 with DS before it ended with EMCS. He was back to back and not budging, perhaps due to a head off the percentile charts?

Oh very interesting thank you! Good to know it isn't actually a thing as I was thinking of basing my birth plan around it. Thank you for clarifying.
