Can I go home after having the pessary or gel?

I’m due to be induced Monday as I’ll be 42 weeks. I assume they will start with the pessary first rather than going straight into the drip?

I had wanted to give birth in a MLU but now have to go to the country hospital to be induced and I really, really don’t want to give birth there Sad

Will they send me home after or will I have to stay? I assumed they’d send me home but a colleague was made to stay so now I’m paranoid

I also had to stay after a pessary. Sorry. Good luck to you Thanks

KatnissMellark · 22/02/2019 11:49

I had to stay. Sorry.

Celebelly · 22/02/2019 11:51

I think only with the balloon do they let you go home.

Ah bollocks :(

This baby just does not want to come out.

I had to stay, the pessary does start to work quite quickly.

PRoseLegend · 22/02/2019 11:55

I had to stay with the gels.
Gave birth in the delivery suite, but insisted on being allowed to move around as much as possible once labor started, including using the shower and exercise ball, gas for pain relief, and using my essential oil diffuser and music.

I had to stay, pessary at 9pm the Monday night, and then monitoring through the night, to make sure things were happening as they should.
Once dd was born I was allowed to move to a midwife led unit closer to home. :)

I had a pessary induction on Wednesday at 41+6 and was allowed to go home after CTG check to make sure baby was ok. Was due to be admitted yesterday for the second pessary but baby came around 12 hours later! I'm convinced that being able to go for a walk and then spend time at home helped labour progress so quickly, I went from cervix entirely closed and posterior pre-pessary to 5cm dilated before going back to hospital so would definitely encourage you to go for this if your hospital allows it! Was still able to use birthing centre and pool etc.

Good luck!

Thanks all!

My main worry is having to stay on a labour ward.

Plus I’ve had to go to the county hospital maternity triage a couple of times during the pregnancy and they are crazy busy (obviously that’s not their fault and I know they are doing their best) but apparently they take ages to discharge you as well. It took them 30 mins to go and get my notes when they discharged me last week. I don’t want to be stuck on a ward post birth for ages, all tired and hormonal with a bunch of other people. I know this is irrational I’m just stressed and hormonal Sad

There is a maternity unit about 25 min drive away from the hospital that offer postnatal beds even if you’ve given birth elsewhere so
Ideally I’d want to go there straight away.

My nightmare was having to stay in hospital after giving birth. In the end we had to spend three nights and actually it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected. It's not quite as awful when you have your new baby with you, and it's quite nice having midwives around all through the day and night to help out. I was glad to get home and get some decent sleep, but our stay was really OK. Take earplugs and noise cancelling headphones - I found that wearing both allowed me to get some good sleep while my partner was there holding/watching baby.

ahhhhheckmecervix · 22/02/2019 12:14

Thanks @Celebelly thag is my biggest fear. I can’t see the midwives being much use as they are just crazy busy but I guess that comes from my experience from the triage rather than labour ward.

I don’t even know if my partner is allowed to stay. Apparently you can pay £125 to stay overnight in a private postnatal room but I can’t see him going for that.

You might have to readjust your expectations, that is bloody quick in my experience. Sorry OP.

Anothertempusername · 22/02/2019 12:16

Another one saying 30 mins isn't bad - took 4 hours to be discharged after a maternity triage visit 3 weeks ago.

Many books, earplugs and snacks, OP!

Celebelly · 22/02/2019 12:16

Ours was open visiting so partners could stay but there was only a chair for them. My DP stayed one night but it wasn't very comfy for him and he was knackered the next day so in the end he went home about 8/9ish and then came back in the mornings. Overnight you tend to be able to get a bit more time and help from the midwives - we had ones come in with us to help with feeding for a good hour or two overnight and it's a bit less pressured than during day.

SwayingInTime · 22/02/2019 12:17

Home after normal scan, ctg and pessary if you are only being induced for being overdue in my unit and you can return to the birth centre to deliver.

SwayingInTime · 22/02/2019 12:17

If it works!

shecamefromgreece · 22/02/2019 12:21

I've had four babies and two inductions. I wasn't allowed to go home. Is the ward before you go down to delivery you don't want to be on or that you you don't want to give birth on labour suite?
The labour rooms are fine you do t even see another person nothing like triage.
After the pessary is put in you are encouraged to go for a walk, I had to back every couple of hours for monitoring but other than that I was walking and sitting in Costa or walking round the grounds.
Ok if you have to stay over night on anti natal it's a bit crap because people are coming and going sometimes there are private rooms available.
In the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter though just focus on taking your lovely baby home.

shecamefromgreece · 22/02/2019 12:27

Sorry just reread and i think it's postnatally.
If you book a private room you tend to get left to it which was fine by me but could feel a little lonely.
One of my inductions was born at 7am so I stayed the day then went home. I would have been able to go home straight from the delivery room but he was huge so I had to stay so they could keep an eye on his sugars.
The other I stayed overnight in a private room (2nd child) and left 24hrs after she was born (gestational diabetes so needed 24hrs of monitoring.
I felt looked after though and the food was lovely!

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences Flowers

I feel less stroppy about it now Grin

I was allowed home. But I only made it to the Tesco 5 mins down the road as I was in agony half an hour after having it inserted, so we went straight back again Grin DS was born 10 hours later
