Baby's first bath

Hi all!

I'm after a bit of advice!

I'm pregnant with my first baby, and I'm pretty confident when it comes to most things, but I'm having a bit of a brain block!

How soon after birth did you give your baby their first bath?
I understand they are cleaned up after birth, and you don't want to get the umbilical cord submerged in water.
I was thinking it would be better to sponge bathe/wash the baby at first, but when is the right time for them to have their first actual baby bath?

I bathed both mine the same day/day after, only an inch or two of water so the cord is not submerged but enabled me to shampoo their heads and give them a good wipe with cotton wool pads.

Topped and tailed (and cleaned around cord) until cord dropped off, then first proper bath at around 2 weeks. Then only twice a week until a month old, then every night as part of bedtime routine.

Soooo many different opinions on when/how/what to use when bathing baby.
Personally I topped and tailed at 2 days old with just warm water. first bath (in the sink) when she was maybe two weeks?
Only used water until baby was probably like, 4 months old. Then I used a tiny amount of baby wash in the water and only once a week until about 1year then used soft soap.
Only now that she is 26 months do we use shampoo! and still only bathed every 4 ish days! All personal choices! :)

We where in hospital until baby was 2wks old. Belly button clamp fell off at about 8 days old. We have been home a week now and had 3 baths. Top and tailed with a flannel daily though.

I think we're all on the same sort of page! Thanks for your advice! Smile

Both of mine have been bathed (in plain water) after about a week or so, and obviously after the cord dropped off. I believe the vernix is really good for their skin, so best not to wash it all off too soon. Plus they smell utterly amazing unwashed.
