I saw my mw today and was told that at 38+2 my baby is breech. I have to have a scan and then theyll go from there. They said theyd probably try turning it if not then itd b mostly likely c section.
Has anyone been in similar situation?
What happened?

Since you asked, 'cos you have to put * at the start and end of EACH word, not just the phrase. Bit of a pain, really...

mawbroon · 05/07/2007 11:51

ah I see thank you very much

evenhope · 05/07/2007 14:01

yumey even though the ECV didn't work in my case, given the same circumstances I would still do it again. It could work, you don't know till you try. Good Luck.

hang upside down on your sofa, yes it can be done then have reflexology, this is also great for induction, i was in labour three hours after my session!

ChubbyScotsBurd · 06/07/2007 11:36

I had an ECV yesterday (well, an attempt). It failed, baby is lodged. Baby has been thus way lodged for 2 months though so I'm hardly surprised it didn't feel inclined to move. It didn't hurt as such - pretty uncomfortable having a big bloke dig his fingers into your pelvis and grapple with baby's bottom but nothing I couldn't cope with by grunting a bit.

I'm now facing a section and have toyed with the idea of trying for a vaginal delivery. But I think it will be easier for me to just accept that baby is breech for a reason and a vaginal delivery is riskier (for baby) than to end up in an emergency section situation. And I've tried EVERYTHING, from ironing boards/birthing balls/acupuncture/music/torches/frozen peas you name it. Baby just gets narked .

Annie75 · 06/07/2007 14:16

How far gone are you ChubbyScotsBurd? Thanks for letting us know what an ECV feels like - I'm a bit anxious about the prospect of having one

I think I'd prefer to leave it and see how it goes after speaking to quite a few people who say their baby turned actually during labour. An emergency c doesn't necessarily have to mean a panicky situation - they should be able to spot up how the baby is progressing - though it seems generally agreed that it's much better to c-section a breech baby not 'progressing' than to use medical intervention (forceps etc).

Good luck anyway!

success rate for ECV is less than 1%, isn't it?

ChubbyScotsBurd · 06/07/2007 16:16

I really wouldn't worry about the ECV procedure Annie, it was no biggie. I was 37 weeks exactly yesterday when we tried. If it was too painful for me the consultant was waiting for me to say stop. But as it was pretty evident that baby wasn't budging it was less than a minute of pressure, and if you make an effort to keep your breathing even and deep then your abdominal muscles don't tense up so much and it's much less sore. I did quite a lot of researching/asking around for experiences of ECV beforehand and the general consensus was that if they turn they do so within 2 or 3 minutes anyway, so IMO it's very little discomfort for a potentially huge gain.

In terms of success rates these vary hugely between obstetricians depending on experience and skill, but I was quoted (as a first timer with a large baby) a conservative 30% chance of it turning (by my very frank consultant). In first timers there's greater uterine tone, and the possibility of an abnormality such as bicornuate uterus can't be excluded so there's a limit to how much force can and should be exterted. In second or later babies the success rate is much greater as the womb is less tonic and the baby usually hasn't started to engage, so some obstetricians will quote you up to 70% success.

Thanks for that - I had no idea how long it took and a friend told me she thought it was agony, which made me feel rather apprehensive... Got a scan in two weeks' time to see if it's turned. Hope you don't feel too disappointed and fingers crossed for your baby changing its mind!

yumeymummy · 09/07/2007 17:48

Just to update.
I had the SVC and it worked!!
Wasnt very comfortable i have to say but was pretty quick and worth it as it worked.

Im having another scan tomorrow to see if its stayed in place or gone breech agaon as it can happen.
Hopefully it will behave an di can have a natural delivery. otherwise itd def a c section.
At least i know ive tried tho.

So id reccommend it as it worked for me, but i wouldnt wanna do it too often!
Ill let u know how scan goes. Thanks again x

I had a natural birth with DD who was breech. She was a frank breech, so very simple birth.

Annie75 · 09/07/2007 22:05

Ooh brill - well done! Have been watching the thread to see what happened. Was it v uncomfortable?

Like Scienceteacher said, even if it did turn back, you can still have a vaginal delivery.

  • Scienceteacher, how did that go for you? Was it noticeably more diff or painful? Am still breech at nearly 36 weeks and still want a natural delivery...
scienceteacher · 10/07/2007 04:15

I would say that my pattern of contractions was different. They didn't really build up to a crescendo - they pretty much stayed at 4 minutes apart for the whole labour. The pain did get a bit more intense, but nothing I couldn't cope with.

I had back pain with the contractions, but I am a natural hands-and-knees labourer, so that was OK too.
