Peppermint post c-section? (Trapped wind)

Has anyone done this and did it help? I have a heap of fresh mint in the garden so wondering if I should take it in with me for my drink bottle to help with potential trapped wind, or if the teabags would be better. Also open to other suggestions! Thanks Smile

I've only read about mint tea/capsules on here. I had an emcs and didn't have any trapped wind issues so didn't know it was a thing 😳 guess it wouldn't hurt to have something just in case

I used the teabags after keyhole surgery and they worked amazing. You can put some of the leaves in the tea with the tea bag. But they were a life saver, good luck!

Also EMCS and no wind. Move round lots will help x

peppermint tea is good for trapped wind many people with ibs use it successfully -

I had an EMCS earlier this year and suffered from awful trapped wind for about 3 days afterwards. Much worse than the pain from the section itself. The peppermint teabags they gave me in hospital did sweet FA to help.

When I got home over an afternoon I drank a couple of mugs of hot water with a few drops of peppermint essential oil and a little honey to sweeten. The wind disappeared within a few hours.

Am not sure that fresh or dried mint leaves will be strong enough to have the desired effect. Also I may be wrong but I think it is only peppermint (not garden mint for example) that has the key properties.

I now always recommend people take peppermint oil in their hospital bag just in case they end up in the same situation. Wish I'd known about it beforehand.

Two EMCS here and I found drinking peppermint tea helped both times. Second time round I was prepared and took my own tea bags with me and ended up sharing them round!

Topsyloulou · 28/01/2019 21:48

Emcs & a elcs here. Both times I've suffered horribly with trapped wind. First time round I didn't realise that's what it was as the pain was in my shoulder. It made me feel quite ill, the nurses says it's very common and they have peppermint oil tablets to give you if you ask for them. I took my own in for my elcs and had some peppermint sweets when I got home too. Definitely worth getting something in just in case as it was awful, far worse than the actual incision pain.

Absolutely worth taking some teabags in, after my first section the shoulder pain from trapped wind was so bad I was given oramorph while DH was sent to the 24 hour supermarket for mint tea. Was better prepared second time round! Just be aware it can cause your milk supply to decrease, I never personally had a problem with feeding after but it can happen.

Had peppermint oil tablets after emcs. They were a godsend, think they were from Holland and Barrett

mrsmonkey14 · 28/01/2019 23:11

2 c sections here. Peppermint oil tablets (from Holland and Barrett or similar) are your friend here! Advised to take by the consultant. I’m not convinced peppermint tea alone would help enough.

KaleidoscopeEyes · 28/01/2019 23:12

The trapped wind after my EMCS was the thing I remember the most. Added to the fact that I live in fear of farting in front of anyone... I was in agony for 2 or 3 days.
The nurses made me a concoction that really helped - I think it was peppermint oil, something like Milk of Magnesia and hot water, it was amazing. Bet peppermint tea would be just as good, I drink that every day and it really helps with digestive issues.

Peppermint water - hot water with peppermint oil - is what you need.

Essentially after a section your bum gives itself a holiday but you get the worst trapped wind, spasms and constipation. The first post section poo is an enormous relief.

Thank you all!! Have added above suggestions to my hospital bag 😬

Definitely peppermint capsules. I have had 2 emcs and one elcs. The pain from trapped wind after the third in my chest and shoulder was horrendous. Much worse than the section pain. The nurses gave me the capsules and they helped brilliantly. Good luck!
