What snacks/drinks shall I take to hospital with me when they induce me??

Carbohydrates are good to eat during labour as they’re easily digested and give a slow release of energy. This will help you through contractions. eg:

rice cakes (with peanut butter if the hospital allows nuts)
pitta (dry)

in terms of drinks, i had some weak squash x

SuperHeroGirl · 09/01/2019 19:09

I took some dried fruit, cereal bars and lucozade squash type drinks

SockQueen · 09/01/2019 19:16

I packed cereal bars, some fruit, and jelly babies, but once labour started I couldn't eat at all, vomited anything solid I tried. I got through labour (mercifully quick-ish) with water and Lucozade Sport, didn't feel hungry at all, but then was STARVING after it was all over. DH went and got me a sausage sandwich from the canteen, which was the best thing I've ever eaten. Though canteen may not be open if you give birth at night, and the ward will probably only be able to give you toast, so you might want something a bit more substantial in your bag just in case!

Mouse14 · 09/01/2019 19:22

I totally over estimated and took a massive bag of all kinds of things. DH made the most of this Hmm but I really only nibbles on the Jelly Babies, San Pelegríno cans and then in the later stages full fat coke.

DO NOT pack anything that rustles. DH is lucky he survived to see the birth through. Totally unnecessary to make so much noise with a bag of peanut M and Ms Angry

Following the birth I inhaled the toast and also a pack of the thin chocolate digestives.
Incredibly good but funnily enough can't bare them now.

My mum brought in a coronation chicken sandwich and cinnamon bun- incredible!!

Lots of luck!

I found those small juice boxes a god-send. Wasn't allowed to eat once in established labour and needed the energy but couldn't keep fizzy stuff down.

PicassoWouldBeProud · 10/01/2019 10:47

I'm wondering about this- need to put some bits in my hospital bag today.

Whyislarryhappy · 10/01/2019 10:53

I had snack a jacks, pretzels and cereal bars.

AmyDowdensLeftLeftShoe · 10/01/2019 13:46

You probably won't be hungry but your OH will want feeding so get lots of the snack food he likes but make sure there is stuff you like in there and make it clear it is yours alone. Be aware maternity units are very hot so chocolate will melt.

In regards to drinks I had squash, water and lucozade. My OH drank the squash. I drank water and drank the lucozade when I was back at home breastfeeding.

Having had four children without feeling the need for snacks during labour, I wonder when this obsession with having constantly available food started.
OK, there was still rationing when I was growing up, so snacks as such didn't exist, but even when I got married and had children people didn't seem obsessed by non-stop feeding.

NanooCov · 10/01/2019 17:19

I vomit through labour so couldn't eat anything but I would pack some protein based snacks as well as carbs and sugars or you may have a wobbly with your blood sugars. You can get fairly palatable protein bars. I'm also partial to a pepperami.

PazRaz10 · 10/01/2019 17:26

Haribo - they were the most amazing thing about 5 mins after delivery when I had a low sugar crash!

Also agree to snacks your partner will want. I couldn't eat during but he was starving!

PazRaz10 · 10/01/2019 17:27

Oh and juice boxes and mini chedders for after too!

Her0utdoors · 10/01/2019 17:30

Jelly Babies and neat Ribena. Anything for a sugar hit that doesn't need much digesting. Rice cakes? Na!

randomsabreuse · 10/01/2019 17:31

My snacks were really for afterwards as had bad memories of food provision with my first.

Biltong and jerky, mini brioche and pain au chocolat were my favourites during my stay. Also graze protein pack was yummy. Got very bored of sweet stuff during night feeds - hence the savoury protein bias. Agree that chocolate was v. sticky on a hot ward

Isthisit01 · 10/01/2019 17:31

Nuts.

I couldn't face food but nuts and nutty cereal bars I could just manage to gobble down for energy.

The hospital brought proper food round and I couldn't face any of it. Although the apple juice went down well.

I wouldn't take anything too sugary as you may get a sugar crash if that's all you eat.

ladyvimes · 10/01/2019 17:32

Lucozade squash got me through. Couldn’t eat once I was in established labour. So I’d recommend sugary (but not fizzy) drinks.

GMtoBe · 10/01/2019 17:33

I packed loads of stuff when I was induced and then the midwife told me I wasn't allowed to eat because I'd had an epidural so had an increased risk of needing surgery! I was in labour for 19 hours and was not happy!

SoyDora · 10/01/2019 17:36

3 labours including an induction and never eaten a single thing I packed!

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 10/01/2019 17:54

I wasn’t allowed to eat anything or drink anything except water! I feel hard done by reading all these posts Grin

Flowerfae · 11/01/2019 17:35

I didn't take anything, one of the midwives went and got DH some chips during break time and he sat there eating them infront of me (he been there for hours to be fair) but I wasn't allowed to eat anything and wasn't happy about him scoffing chips because I was really hungry Grin (I grabbed one when the midwife left the room and he told on me, the arse)
