Bottle Feeding

Good Morning

I was looking for advice on how to prepare 'room temperature' babies bottles for a newborn or what other new mums found best?!

I plan to bottle feed my baby and looking at all the different types of bottles/formula etc out there?!

Two friends have recommended feeding at room temperature as this is what is done in hospital?!

Just looking for advice on how to prepare this and what formula is best?!xx

Preparing room temperature bottles is actually quite hard unless using ready made formula (which is what they use in hospital).

If using powder, you should make them fresh each time with a full amount of boiled then cooled to 70degree water and powder, then cool using running water until a safe drinking temperature. However this takes time. You then have 2 other options, perfect prep machine or bulk making. Personally I feel pre-making is safest. make up bottles as above then store in back of the fridge until needed, heating if you want or feeding cold.

I'm expecting my first in January and Have bought a Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine, mainly for night feeds so we don't have to faff about waiting for a boiled bottle to reach the right temperature.

I know a few people who use boiling hot water for part of the mix to sterilise the formula, then have a big of cool boiled water in their fridge to top up.

Perfect Prep machine all the way!

I bottle fed my DS from birth and the machine honestly takes all the pain and guesswork out of bottle preparation and delivers the milk at a warm room temp. You can pick a machine up on ebay or FB marketplace groups so cheap if you think buying brand new is a bit steep.

Just get a perfect prep and then use the ready made bottles at room temperature when you go out.

Hi, best advice I got was to sterilise bottles together, boil kettle, fill bottles for the day and screw tops on.
Add the formula to the bottle when needed. stand in a jug of hot water to warm slightly.
I never had any problems and it was super quick.
I've heard bad things about the tommee tippee perfect prep. A MCA woman actually came to visit me and had a leaflet with her warning of the dangers. something about the bacteria and mould that forms in the pipes despite cleaning and there had been a case of a baby dying after being fed using one of those. I'd have a read up about it if I were you.
It's just as quick to add the scoops to the bottle and shake!

I wouldn't follow this advice - Formula needs to be sterilised with hot water (I think at least 70°C, as it's not sterile. You can then top up with cool boiled water.

With regards to concerns about Perfect Prep, it is up to the parent to ensure that they clean the tubes and change the filter as recommended- I'm dubious everyone does that.

Would you consider trying to breast feed? Takes all this faff and expense out of the equation! Good luck with the bottle - TTPP machine is well reviewed.

You didn't read my message correctly. The bottles are sterilised beforehand! The water is added to the bottles. I thought it was pretty simple but there you go................ (honestly......)

I think she wants to bottle feed. She most likely doesn't want to be in any more pain or tortured!!

siblingrevelryagain · 12/12/2018 08:57

She did read your message correctly, but you didn’t read hers-m4rdybum stated that the formula/powder needed to be sterilised with boiling water, so adding it to lukewarm water is dangerous (although in true MN style you’ll no doubt have an army of women claiming they know better than the medical/scientific community because it never did their babies any harm!)

ICJump · 12/12/2018 08:58

Orsy it’s not just the bottle that needs to be sterilised but the formula also. Formula needs to be made with 70 degree water to kill bacteria living in the formula.

m4rdybum · 12/12/2018 11:46

Orsy - please see previous posters comments regarding the formula powder needed to be sterilised.

I have 3 kids pregnant with 4th and have always put 30 oz of boiling water In the bottles and then when needed I would boil the kettle and then add the rest of the ozs with the water then the formula and all my kids have been fine but everyone is different and will find there own way if doing things ..
