Induced Labour

I've been told by doctors that I'll be induced when I'm at term. Everyone is telling me different things about induction labour - some say it's more painful, others say it's easier, I can't seem to get a lot of answers and I'd like to know what other people's experiences have been with it?

I've had 2 natural labours and 1 induced and I did find the induced labour more painful. The contractions were back to back instead of having that little break in between. Was also my quickest labour. Everyone body is different though

Depends on reasons for induction, if you’ve had babies before, how ‘favourable’ your cervix is, how high your pain tolerance is. Many many things. All the luck in the world x

Justmuddlingalong · 26/11/2018 23:26

I had 3 inductions so have no spontaneous labour to compare it to. It was painful, but not so bad that I did it once and never again.

I was induced last week with my first so i have never had a natural labour to compare it to. They started the drip around 10am and i gave birth at 23.10. It was able to cope with gas and air until about the half way point but the exhaustion took over and got the epidural and managed to sleep right up until the pushing part. I'd recommend an epidural you really need that strength and energy for pushing. All the best x

I've had an induced and a spontaneous labour. I think the induced was harder to cope with as it ramped up much more rapidly and I wasn't able to use water as I could in my spontaneous labour. My body also wasn't able to build up the endorphins as it does in a spontaneous labour. But the actual contractions didn't hurt any more. The short answer is that it depends on so many factors, all you can do is go in with an open mind.

I had an induction. I had a pessary in for 90 minutes and it was removed due to having too many contractions. I then gave birth about 8.5 hours later using a TENS machine and gas and air. I was fine in labour as long as I wasn't laying on my back then it was extremely painful.

Other women I know who have had inductions before and since have had a variety of experiences - some like mine while others lead to a C-section.

Oh and I was considered high risk there as the women who had c-sections were considered low risk.

In short there is no way of knowing in advance how your induction will go. Just go in with an open mind and be prepared for a long stay.

I was induced, labour hurts, not sure if it's worse when induced or natural more. maybe they are putting it down to been induced but it's really because it was a different labour (not one is the same) I didn't mind been induced at all

randomsabreuse · 29/11/2018 16:05

I had 2 labours, 1 spontaneous, 1 induced with gel before doing the rest "naturally". Induced one probably more painful because it took longer to actually get going but about the same after it was full on labour.

Pethedine did bog all, gas and air much more effective for me.

FeedMyFaceWithBattenberg · 29/11/2018 16:14

I was induced nearly a year ago!
My first so no comparison.
I had gas and air then 7.5mg for pain in my hips.
It was manageable.

I’m due to be induced Saturday ! So following post for experiences !
I’m not worried about the pain , I realise it’s going to be painful not worried about myself , being done for baby- I’m more concerned about how long it all takes - heard mixed experiences of hours or days ! 😕

SnuggyBuggy · 29/11/2018 19:04

I went straight to drip, I was having on off contractions but they needed to get DD on to IV antibiotics, it took 6 hours and I followed the midwife's advice to get an epidural. I couldn't feel the pain of the contractions but they felt more intense.

BrightStarrySky · 29/11/2018 19:06

I was induced twice and both times I had the baby within 15 hours. It was ok and I would do it again. As others say it’s different for everyone. Also don’t let the midwives discourage you- I was told I wasn’t dialated enough and it would take ages but then baby came out not too long after that. First time round my tens machine helped but second time round it was just annoying. Good luck to you- you can do this. Xx

cindersrella · 29/11/2018 19:07

Fran i was induced with both. Pessary the first time and gel the second.
I don't think they use pessary anymore?

Inducement by pessary was at 9.30am and I had her at 3.30pm the next day.

Gel inducement was at around 9.30am again and I had her at 12.20am the next day.

I had to have waters broke with both as I was struggling to dilate.

Can't remember the first but the second the popped them at 11.30pm and I had her at 12.20am.

My pains were much worse and things moved pretty quickly once I had, had waters broke.

Gas and air became my best friend!

Bigonesmallone3 · 29/11/2018 19:09

One natural birth
One induced birth
Wouldn't say one was more painful, I think induced seems more painful as once labour started it progressed quicker (still 9 hrs) than natural labour..
Was also harder to push induced baby out even tho smaller but i assume this is coz she was a lil earlier..

Natsku · 29/11/2018 19:11

I've had one spontaneous and one induced but was induced at the right time I guess as my waters had partly broken so natural labour was imminent anyway. Induced hurt more I think and actually lasted twice as long as the spontaneous one but he was a bit stuck so that's probably why, and they couldn't turn the drip up as much as they would normally because his heart rate kept dropping when they did.

Gas and air is the best stuff, it got me through it. I had several epidurals (one off ones not the kind that tops up) and only the first one worked properly but when it did it was wonderful and I even dosed off for a while.

Lauren83 · 29/11/2018 19:14
