yes for both elective sections.. through the night and into next morning

for a 1pm birth and for a 5pm birth so think it might be the overnight thing

you must have had one .. they can't paralyse you and not catheterise

ShrinkingViolet · 18/06/2007 14:39

most definately no catheter with DD3 - I specially asked them to wait till after the epidural as I was a bit squirmy about it, and they looked at me blankly and said "we don't use catherters for sections now".
Obviously different hospitals have different policies (and policies change over time too).

jampot · 18/06/2007 14:42

i had it in for 24 hours after i was struggling to get my knickers on. My consultant came in and caught me struggling with tubes and knickers and standing in pool of blood

IntergalacticWalrus · 18/06/2007 14:44

Had one for both of mine- one emergency and one elective.

They were removed the morning following the birth (DS1 born 8.30am and DS2 born at 1.50pm) so it does seem to be overninght

It's not uncomfortable. I remeber after having DS1 and the emptied it and I thought "Wow, I peed loads, and I didn;t weven notice!"

It feels weierd coming out but it's only a momentary thing

Thanks for all the replies ladies for some reason this aspect causes me more stress than the thought of a section. Bit squeamish about it don't know why as this baby (no 2 ) is IVF so have had lots of fanjo activity (3rd go)and I'm a nurse although I am a children's nurse so maybe that excuses my squeamishness!!!!

andiem, I think we have all things we feel more uneasy with then others....must admit, before ds 3 I always dreaded the thought of Spinal Block/Epidural and avoided it, however, by the time it came to it that really was at the back of my mind (my ds was a Emergency C-section, so, no time to ponder about it, really)!
As for the catheter....I really didn't feel it at all whielst in (even ocne the feeling came back, and it didn't hurt when it was pulled out, neither, I sort of expected it to hurt a bit.
I am sure you will be fine.

RedFraggle · 18/06/2007 15:30

Had section at 2pm and had catheter out following day around midday as I was walking about and didn't like having to carry a bag of wee around with me!
(Funny that...)

fruitful · 18/06/2007 19:59

1st cs - had cs at 11am, catheter out next morning

2nd cs - had cs at 5pm, catheter out next morning

Not a problem either time (quite nice not to have to go to the toilet that first night!)

zazas · 18/06/2007 21:23

Gosh am I the only one who had one in for longer than 24 hours? I think they said that they cut me when they put it in and so there was blood in the urine and it was there for nearly 3 days. It was quite funny walking around with my 'wee bag' especially sitting at the table with the other ladies to eat . As you can see it didn't bother me at all - you are just so wrapped in the baby! I do remember that disposable pants came in handy though as I could rip them off rather than feed the bag through the leg hole.

mrsharrypotter · 18/06/2007 21:31

I had both of mine removed when the epidural wore off, it was just there to stop me going without realising I think!

ScottishMummy · 18/06/2007 21:52

only knew i had it when they asked to remove it so less than 12 hours hth

Has no one mentioned the gushing of wee for the first few times you go to the loo after they take it out?
I guess the catheter stretches your wee hole (20 years since Biology O level so don't ask me what the proper name for 'wee hole' is )
The first few wees are like a waterfall ... then you do your pelvic floors like a maniac for fear of pissing like a horse for the rest of your life

Skribble · 18/06/2007 23:01

Didn't notice it going in or out, well second time it has slipped out and I was a bit wet but nurse was so nice and I was cleaned up in no time.

I am not one of these Mums who felt able to leave my modesty at the door and when it came to cathaters, my modesty seemed to remain intact anyway.

flibbertyjibbet · 18/06/2007 23:11

24 hours. Well, 22 actually, the policy at our hosp is to take it out and take you for shower after 24 hours. But I begged and begged them to take it out a bit early cos inlaws were coming to visit, they dont' like me and there was just something about them seeing my WEE BAG hanging there that I couldn't face.

3andnomore · 19/06/2007 10:54

lol ghosty...must say, it was not a problem I had....but then, it took me like almost a year to even notice my bladder being full and me needing a wee...I took myself in regular intervals, as otherwise I could have gone a day and a night without going at all...I just didn't feel that my bladder was full, but of course that is not so great, and I didn't want to over extend my poor bladder.

Harry2007 · 19/06/2007 23:14

Andiem - I had exacltly the same fear as you - I was more worried about the catheter than the CS!

How silly was I!!!!

The midwife asked whether I would like the catherter put in before going to theatre or whilst in there. I chose to have it put in after the epidural! Obviously didn't feel it going in.

It was taken out the following morning at my request. It was so nice not to have to get up to go the loo though - absolute godsend actually!

I do remeber that when the midwife came to remove it, she said "Ooh, you don't have any pants on" and I just grinned to myself seeing that I'd had CS 24 hours ago, had a gorgeous little baby boy and that I was quite happy to sit knickerless on my massive incontinence pad in bed!

It really is fine - you'll see!

Meglet · 21/06/2007 22:01

had c-section at 10am , catheter taken out following morning, stung a tiny bit when it came out but more a weird feeling than painful. Was quite lovely not to have to get up to pee having spent last month of pregancy pee-ing every hour.

eidsvold · 22/06/2007 09:37

had c-sections in morning - taken out next morning.

c-section late afternoon - taken out next afternoon.

lemonaid · 22/06/2007 09:43

DS born 10.35 pm, catheter taken out somewhere between breakfast and lunch the next morning IIRC -- so probably around 12 hours.

sazzybee · 22/06/2007 22:02

I had mine taken out morning following a cs at 5pm. I was worried about it too but wasn't aware of it being put in or coming out. Had forgotten all about it until I saw this thread
