I am quite excited this morning and since no-one is intereseted in my prostin gel and waterbirth thread I am starting another one to share it with you .

I am poised to go in and look after a friend who is being induced today. She had prostin gel last night and I am just waiting for the call to say we can get on with things, or she needs more gel. I looked after her 2 years ago when she was induced with gel but had a lovely waterbirth. My boss was not pleased with me 'allowing' her in the pool and we have had words again about the same thing probably happening. I think I have persuaded her though that we will only use the pool if all is well.

Anyway, I am quite excited because I love looking after women and being left to my own devices. I am on a day off so I will be able to give her my sole attention instead of managing a labour ward.

If anyone is interested, I will update you on the outcome

Mears..... it's the mother to be who is suppose to nest not you

mears · 27/08/2004 23:47

I'm back

Well, got there at 2 o'clockish and spoke to df who was having some contractions but nothing too regular. The registrar was coming in approx 10 mins to reassess. I met her in L/S and asked her to make sure she gave the cervix a good sweep!

On reassessment at 2.40pm df was still 1-2cm dilated but was favourable to come to L/S for her waters to be broken.

Unfortuantely someone else was in the birthing pool - aaarrghhh!!!!

So we decided not to break her waters until the pool was free. The sweep had started strong contractions so she was using gas and air quite happily plus her TENS machine. The nedical staff were happy with that so we waited, and waited and waited.....

Finally the pool was vacated at 7.30pm. It needed cleaned and the pool bleached so I said I would examine closer to the time the pool would be ready. I repeated the CTG which was excellent. I re-examined at 7.55pm and df was 4cm dilated. I broke her waters and immediately the contractions picked up in strength (they had tailed off a bit).

The pool was ready to be filled at 8.25pm. It was ready for df to go in at 8.40pm. She felt pressure at 9.05pm. Fely pushy at 9.08pm. Baby's head visible at 9.10pm and delivered at 9.12pm

A beautiful boy who is probably going to be called Tom. He was the same weight as his big brother 7lb 21/2 oz. He breastfed in the pool. Mum got out and had a physiological third stage at 10.04pm. She had a small tear that will probably only need a couple of stitches but one of my colleagues said she would do that so I could get home because I am working tomorrow.

I am so glad that we waited until the pool was empty before continuing with the induction. Mum and Dad are absolutely delighted at having 2 water babies. Fabulous

Mears, how wonderful! Thank you for sharing that with us - what a lovely friend you are, the family must be overjoyed. :)

littlemissbossy · 27/08/2004 23:58

My dh had just gone to sleep, so I thought I'd go online to see what was happening on mumsnet ... so glad I did, lovely news Mears

2ticks · 28/08/2004 00:13

Wow Mears - I've been checking in on this thread all day - what a lovely story to read before bedtime - congratulations!!

Skate · 28/08/2004 10:18

That's fantastic news - sounds like it was amazing!! I'm jealous - no pool at our hospital! If I'm 4cm and going nowhere why don't they break my waters, or is there just no indication for it?

mears · 28/08/2004 16:21

No indication for it Skate. My friend was a planned induction and that is why her waters were broken. How are you today?

Skate · 28/08/2004 16:25

Not bad today but everything seems to have stopped. Having runs of contractions for maybe 1.5 hrs then they stop. Have just been in to be monitored as baby a bit less active and also have suspected UTI so have been px cephalexin. Maybe the UTI is making my uterus 'irritable' and that's why it's contracting but there is no doubt something happened over Thurs night as I went from being closed to 4cm. Oh well, just a waiting game - hope I don't have to be induced.

mears · 28/08/2004 20:50

Could be Skate. Have you got other signs of a UTI such as frequency or burning passing urine?

Hopefully things will happen for you soon.

Only one pool in your hospital mears?

edam · 28/08/2004 21:28

This is such a lovely thread. Really happy for your friend and her water babies ? and you!

WideWebWitch · 28/08/2004 22:19

Ahhh! Well done Mears and your friend.

Skate · 28/08/2004 22:27

Mears - not particularly (frequency only as much as you'd expect in pregnancy).

I've never had a 'show' before but since about Thursday I seem to have had loads (sorry, a bit TMI probably!) - I thought it would be a small amount once and that was it but it keeps coming!

mears · 29/08/2004 00:13

Yes Midden, there is only one pool. We are going to move to a newly built unit in 2006 and there is still only going to be one pool which I think is ridiculous.

Skate - it is amazing how much 'show' a body can produce

Lovely story Mears. What is "sweeping the cervix?"

hester · 29/08/2004 10:36

What a lovely birth story. Makes me feel all warm and gooey

mears · 29/08/2004 11:22

Sweeping the cervix is when the midwife/doctor inserts a finger (or 2) in to the cervix and runs them around the inside. That separates the membranes from around the inside of the cervix which releases prostaglanin, a hormone that stimulates labour. Does not always work but can start labour off.
