Snacks in Labour haha.

Probably the last thing I'll be thinking of but want to be prepared, was thinking of snacks/drinks to take to hospital when in labour.
So far I've thought of:

  • sandwiches for me and the hubby
  • lucozade drinks (non fizzy)
  • nutrigrain bars
  • nuts

Anyone else any ideas of anything they craved/wanted whilst in labour

The only time in my trust that you're not "allowed" to eat is if you have an epidural. This is for reasons mentioned above for c section.

Food is vital for labour otherwise to keep your energy up but also to supply your uterus with glucose needed for it to contract.
You don't want adrenaline in labour as that slows contractions down, tasty food can help oxytocin which can help keep those contractions going!

In my bag I've got small snack size things high in energy. Small cake bites, Pringles, jelly babies and lots of fruit.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 23/10/2018 18:09

I couldn't face food at all while in labour. I did wish I'd packed snacks after I'd given birth though, especially as the hospital food was vile and I couldn't face meals, for a good couple of days. I just wanted to pick at stuff. So this time I have a bag of cereal bars, fruit loaf, crackers, individually wrapped croissants etc which we'll leave in the car and DH can retrieve once baby has arrived and I'm transferred to postnatal.

Juice boxes

Straws are realistic!

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 23/10/2018 18:14

I didn’t eat anything in labour. All I had was Blue Powerade (thought it would be a good ‘energy’ drink) and ribena ... both of which made me vomit spectacularly!

Nellyelora · 23/10/2018 18:15

I kept vomiting whilst I was in labour. The only thing I was able to keep down was oatcakes which I nibbled periodically. Also couldn't drink the lucozade sport I brought with me as it was overbearingly sweet. This time round I'm packing oatcakes again (somewhat interestingly they've been one of a handful of things I've been able to eat with morning sickness) and one of those Robinson juice triangles as I'm assuming they won't taste as sweet. I also had some glucose tablets which were handy.

After birth I was absolutely desperate for a fizzy drink so will have one packed so I don't have to send DP out hunting down a vending machine Grin

Stillwishihadabs · 23/10/2018 18:15

Do you have children amazing ?

teejayem · 23/10/2018 18:20

I had approximately 5000000 Percy pigs while I was in labour. The mini ones, before they changed the recipe.
And the M&S choc mini rolls. Was totally off my sugary tits on Diamorph though, and bloody glad I had the snacks as I went into Labour at 5pm and didn't give birth until 4.30 the following day. Missed the dinner trolley on both counts

treaclesoda · 23/10/2018 18:20

I still remember the horror of being refused anything to eat or drink because I was being induced, and it was over 10 years ago. It was about 60 hours in total, I've never been so hungry and exhausted. They wouldn't even let me have tea and toast afterwards Angry

AmazingGrace16 · 23/10/2018 18:25

Yes @stillwish, I do.

randomsabreuse · 23/10/2018 18:30

During labour all I wanted was some form of drink with a straw (planning to steal DD's spare water bottle).

The first night after the birth I was so unbelievably hungry, especially at 5am, 6am and 7am before the ward breakfast arrived at 8.30am. I was so sick of cereal bars that the first thing in my bag this time is some Biltong and some Jerky!

Haint · 23/10/2018 18:35

I was sick approximately 56,675 times whilst in labour. I used precisely nothing out of my carefully packed bag. I didn’t bother the second time

unicornchaser · 24/10/2018 16:26

I'm anticipating not wanting to eat much from other people's experiences so have only packed high energy snacks recommended by my marathon running sister! So flapjacks, jelly babies, isotonic drinks, the puréed fruit pouches meant for kids and a bag of the fruit n nut trail mix 👌🏻

Oh and spearmint polos cos I'm addicted to them just now!

TheLionQueen1 · 24/10/2018 16:33

I nibbled on a few rich tea biscuits but drank so much lucozade sport it was ridiculous, fortunately the hospital shop sold it as there was a moment I almost killed my DH when I asked him to pass the bottle and he said we'd run out

beccii161016 · 25/10/2018 16:06

Water and lucozade, with regards to food I'd think more about what you might want after labour or if you have to stay in. As lots of PP's have said, eating was the last thing on my mind. No matter how "essential" it might be, when you're in shit tons of pain for hours on end you just don't feel like eating!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/10/2018 16:12

I was ravenous during my last labour, I was induced & it was like the drip went in & bam I wanted all the food! I actually ate a packet of plain crisps & drank still Lucozade (raspberry flavour), I'm not sure I could have had anything with much flavour tbh. Dh also got me a fresh plough mans baguette that I ate after I had given birth but was still hooked up to the drip etc (not my first baby so I'm ok at eating most things ine handed). It was like the food of the gods Grin

ineedwine99 · 25/10/2018 16:14

I had jelly babies after she was born :-D

Not a thing during, 1 sip of tea was all i managed, was too spaced out in between contractions

bellsbuss · 25/10/2018 16:38

I was booked in for an induction so didn't know how long I would be in for, I packed lots but OH ploughed he way through most of it. I was told to arrive at 11 but we left quite early and as I wanted a sausage and egg mcmuffin and hash brown. I took 2 chicken Caesar salad wraps, multi pack of Pom bears , multi pack of Haribo, tubs of fruit salad , chocolate , kettle crisps , bottles of water , Capri sun pouches , Pepsi max. I remember by teatime OH moaning there wasn't much left and going to the shop for more food, I just wanted to punch him as I was getting some bad pains. Baby came a few hours later

mamaduckbone · 25/10/2018 16:41

My dh force fed me jelly babies in the latter stages of labour when I was running out of steam - couldn’t look at them again for years!
So sugary stuff for during and tasty stuff (nuts, cereal bars etc) for afterwards I’d say.

elliejjtiny · 25/10/2018 18:01

I wasn't allowed to eat anything. Woke up bleeding so panicked and dashed to the hospital without having breakfast. Only allowed water while they tried to decide whether to induce me or not. Finally induced at 9pm which didn't work so baby delivered via c-section 5 hours later. Looking back it's no wonder it didn't work.

Pebblesandfriends · 25/10/2018 18:06

Honestly I had no time or inclination to eat during labour but sweets were a good pick me up after baby was out.

Thismummyruns · 25/10/2018 18:13

I took a whole range of light snacks & drinks- not one of them were touched

FartnissEverbeans · 26/10/2018 20:18

I spent seven hours wretching and screaming so I wasn’t really in the mood for Haribo.

However, I could have done with some decent snacks afterwards. They brought me a salad and I nearly threw it back at them. I sent DH to McD’s instead Grin

LynseyLou1982 · 26/10/2018 21:32

I had an epidural and i was allowed to say. Our hospital had an M&S Simply food downstairs do I sent DP to get me a sandwich. I then had sweets, cereal bars and mini cheddars in my labour bag. For the pushing part DP fed me jelly babies in between pushes

Patienceofatoddler · 27/10/2018 07:50

It just shows how everyone's experience is different.

I was induced at 14:00 - was walking around and had some juice etc but no dinner which was provided on the ward as didn't cross my mind.

Over to labour ward at 9pm baby born 10pm.

Although I did have the most amazing Jam on toast on delivery suite at midnight before getting some rest

But of all the things I took into hospital food just wasn't one of them.

ShackUp · 27/10/2018 07:51

Didn't eat either time. The tea and toast was very welcome afterwards!
