Hospital stay

SlightDark · 23/10/2018 14:02

If you happen to give birth at 8am say, and have a n uneventful birth (vaginal) so you have to stay in hospital overnight ?

I know everyone must say this but I'm 27 weeks now and looking at hospital bag stuff I just think I'd rather come home ASAP.

Especially as my hospital allows partners overnight.

No, you can go home when they are happy all is well with you and the baby.

newcupcake · 23/10/2018 14:13

Pack as of you are staying in a night or two though as you never know

Twickerhun · 23/10/2018 14:17

Depends if baby is feeding etc but you might well be able to leave and have follow up community care, however you should prepare (mentally and practically) for a stay just in case as well

SoyDora · 23/10/2018 14:18

No, if there’s no reason to stay then you don’t have to.
I had my first at 4.15pm and was home by 9pm. Had my second at 8.30am and was home by 2pm.

elliejjtiny · 23/10/2018 14:41

I stayed for 3 hours after my 2 hospital vaginal births. With my dc2 I had a quick labour so I got to the hospital at 11:00 and left at 3:30. I spent longer there when I went to the antenatal clinic!

It's a good idea to have an extra bag packed with some spare pads, nappies, clothes etc so if you have to stay in longer then all the extra bits you need are all ready for someone to just pick up and bring in. I didn't do this with my youngest and I wish I had as dh wasn't very good at bringing in exactly what I wanted. And of course when you're tired and hormonal, your dh bringing in panty liners when you asked for massive maternity pads feels like a total disaster.

BlossomCat · 23/10/2018 14:44

I was going to have a home birth. I ended up staying in hospital for a week. Shock
Pack more changes of clothes, knickers especially, than you think is necessary. You can always take them home again, better than being caught short.

Doilooklikeatourist · 23/10/2018 14:46

Had my 2nd at 9 pm , home 2 hours later
First baby was a different story though

BakedBeeeen · 23/10/2018 14:50

I stayed in hospital 6 hours after each of my children were born. I wasn't keen to stay in the post natal ward as I had heard awful things about it!

SlightDark · 23/10/2018 14:51

I think it’s the clothes side of it that baffles me, due in Jan but hoping that as hospital is warm I can wear vests and joggers afterwards but what I don’t get it can I just bring comfy pajamas if I’m in a hospital bed? Cover with a dressing gown to walk around ?

I dunno, I just can’t imagibe being comfy after both having to wear lots of clothes

Just bring pyjamas ( I think , long time ago for me ) dressing gown and slippers , socks and big knickers

grace7 · 23/10/2018 22:38

If all is well, they'll let you go after the routine checks on baby. I gave birth to my son at 9:16am, and left later that day. Just had to wait for ds to be checked and for paperwork etc.

grace7 · 23/10/2018 22:40

Oh, and for myself I took in one clean change of clothes for after showering etc.

Unfairestofthemall · 23/10/2018 22:51

Pyjamas are fine for wondering around :) you've just produced a human comfort comes first! Travel toiletries are good like shower gel and stuff can all be just tucked in the small spaces.
Pack a big bag and leave it in the car can always take it home but it's always nice to have extras . Prepare for overnight because you never can tell with babies hopefully you'll be in and out though. Good luck!

Mummyh2016 · 27/10/2018 12:31

No I have birth at 10.30am, we had to stay in for 12 hours as my waters went more than 24 hours before. I was given the option to either stay in overnight or go home at 10.30pm. We left that night, I really didn’t want to stay in!

Onebiteofeverything · 27/10/2018 12:34

I went in at 6am, gave birth at 11am and was home for 5pm.

jellyandsoup · 27/10/2018 12:38

Pjs/comfy clothes is fine. How lobg you will stay depends in lots of things, sometimes you or the baby will need more observations, its not uncommon for babys to be put on 3hrly obs for 24 hours. If you plan to breastfeed they will want that to be going well before they let you go. Pack lightly then have more stuff in the car just in case. Do you live close to the hospital, if you go home quickly you may need to pop back for some checks.

Eminybob · 27/10/2018 12:48

I was told to stay in over night with dc1 so they can help establish breast feeding. I think if I had planned to FF they would have sent me home as ds was born at lunch time.

I’m due to have dc2 imminently and I should be able to go home sooner this time as I (technically) should find BF easier and therefore need less help. I’m not 100% convinced of that though as last time was 4 years ago!

Lostoldusername · 28/10/2018 19:02

Pack for the "just in case"- I had my first at 10.09am, and home by tea time but had my 2nd, 3hr labour but had a major PPH and needed 3 blood transfusions and had to stay 3 days! I hadn't packed enough as expected a straight forward birth like my 1st and had to rely on DH bringing things in (size 10 knickers and Pjs - it was 6mths before I got back in them! Haha!)

didireallysaythat · 28/10/2018 19:07

Took 6 hours for me to be discharged - I'd left my bed and was in a side room waiting for a doctor to do a discharge. On the plus side we got the heating test done.

SoyDora · 28/10/2018 19:12

This time I’m going to pack hoping/expecting to be discharged quickly as per my previous DC but will leave another bag packed at home ready for someone to pick up and bring in for me if needed with enough stuff for a few more days stay.

ToddlerTamerMumma · 28/10/2018 20:03

I gave birth at 3:18pm - uneventful (I.e no stitches, no epidural etc.) and left the hospital at 7:30pm. Would have been sooner but the discharge papers took some time.

Starlight345 · 28/10/2018 20:16

My Ds was born at 00.20 , I knew I was going to be in a couple of days but would of been no option to go home

SoyDora · 28/10/2018 20:20

You mean because of the timing Starlight345? I have two friends who gave birth at a similar time and were home early hours of the morning. My best friend gave birth at midnight, home at 4 then did the school run for her older 2 at 8am!

Starlight345 · 28/10/2018 20:51

Yes I meant due to timing . We hadn’t left labour room till about 4 but my Ds had to go up to neonatal for blood tests .
