Requested c-section on 4th child

Hi my midwife doesn't want to refer me for a consultation for a c-section with my 4th child after a induced 3 day labour that was traumatic.

My contractions started and stopped after my waters where broken after thw midwife slowed down my contractions by medicating me to go to sleep as not enough space in birthing suite.

both me and baby where having ecgs during my labour i had to stand for 7 hours to give birth clips attached to his head midwife shouting at me that i was stressing us out. All the while with no pain relief and contractions where excruciating

Then 6 hours after 2 injections for placenta to try come was just getting ready for theatre when a dr came in and just put her hand in and twisted and pulled... excruciating already screaming and crying then gave me no antibiotics and ended up with a infection and left over placenta.

It was just horrendous to me i was shaking heart rate was all over the place i felt i had no control and my midwife thinks i would be better with a homebirth wtf ?

Tell the midwife it’s not her decision and to refer you.
The consultant may be arkward but you really shouldn’t be getting blocked at this point.

SpottingTheZebras · 17/10/2018 16:19

I’m sorry to hear what you have been through. It isn’t up to your midwife to decide what birth is best for you. If she will not refer you, can you contact either the hospital’s supervisor of midwives or their PALs?

Courtneybrown · 17/10/2018 16:27

Yes i thought that she said i have other children to pick up etc and a c-section will take longer to recover from that a homebirth will be more relaxing.

but not if my heart rate or babys drops again or placenta gets stuck again and my baby went inro cardiac arrest at 8 days old due to them sending him home with phenomia so suffered pnd and i just want to be in control ive had treatment done to my cervix and ovaries so not sure if thats what caused a bad 3rd labour first 2 where fine x

Just keep insisting she really doesn’t have a say if you explain your reasons they will have to at least offer you a consultant appointment.

Courtneybrown · 17/10/2018 16:55

Thank you im 17+4 today she said i can't get a consultant appointment until atleast 24 weeks if i was adamant is this true x

Most trusts won’t sign it off until near your due date anyway, in my view, just to make sure they have adequate time to be as arkward and obstructiveas possible. Unfortunately.
So it won’t make any difference if you see them at 24 weeks I’d think you’d be very lucky to have it agreed then anway.
In my lay persons view all your midwife is trying to do is stall you. So just Persist with it. Good luck.

Thank you again i will keep persivering xx

Hi @courtneybrown,

I made a similar request to my midwife; she was a little reluctant too but I decided not to explain my reasons to her as it wasn’t her decision, simply said I knew I needed a referral to the consultant and would appreciate her putting it through. Went armed with information to prove I’d researched everything to my consultant appointment and after a follow up appointment to check I’d not changed my mind it was agreed.
It can be done. Read the Nice guidelines and Birth Rights webpage for information.
Good luck!

Ps- I hope you put in a complaint about your last birth; it sounds awful Flowers

Hi coffe, could I ask how far along in your pregnancy you were when they agreed your c section?

Coffee3 · 21/10/2018 09:24

Hi @whiskersonkittens01 - I love your username!
I was 28 weeks /29 weeks

whiskersonkittens01 · 21/10/2018 09:37

Ah thank you.
I’m not being seen again until 35 weeks after requesting an elcs because of previous traumatic birth and I feel that they are delaying things until quite late for me.
In terms of if they say no it’s doing to be difficult to change my hospital in that time frame.

Courtneybrown · 21/10/2018 09:44

Thank you yes im going to go in armed with info as i believe they are trying to delay it till its too late as well..

you would think we know our own bodies & if we are asking for a c-section there's a valid reason as where not going to put our selfs through that lightly. X

Hi @Courtneybrown I'm 15+3 and I've said from start I want an elective c section. My midwife referred me to the consultant straight away so my first appointment with him will be at 20 weeks. I wasn't challenged at all on my choice of birth. I think hospitals now need to allow you your choice or if they won't do it they should recommend you to a trust that will. Best of luck with it x

Courtneybrown · 25/10/2018 08:28

Thank you i can see her point with kiddies running around but i just think another traumatic birth would just re trigger my anxiety lol it is our body and we should have the final say x
